    Re: BC12D bungee tool

I have not heard anything but have gone to 3 cords.

Forrest said he was going to contact them too, maybe he has some news.

These tools won't make you do that. All you need to do is remove the seat sling bar and the seat front.

I have even put them in with the streamline bungee covers on the belly still in place.

I also think the drude tool is very effective. Getting a bungee off while intact is not nearly as difficult as safely installing one. For one thing, usually (unless you screw up and have to remove the new one) the used bungee has less tension. Also, when you take it off you only have to get it up and over the lip and then it can take its own trajectory and still accomplish the goal. When installing the bungee it has to go into a specific location and dave's tool does that effortlessly. Anyone that has ever used one would not consider all the marginally effective and potentially maiming efforts of the past. Sure people have used model A jacks and prybars but the Rude tool lets you keep the rest of your teeth...

I just flip them off with a large #1 phillips , flip and duck, usually you will find the rubber is "dead" . A shop crane into the cabin will work too, use a flat strap and pull it out or cut it off when done. Ask an old Pitts owner how that is done.
There was a "field tool" that was used too, it was a long curved handle, and flipped them on from the front or back. pics when possible, winter is back!

Thanks. I'll try to borrow, if not, I will buy one.

Anyone have thoughts on bungee material. I've read recently that new ones aren't as good. Is there more than one brand?

            thanks

I bought from Univair who sells Superior brand and Aircraft Spruce that may sell Superior and others.

I would say buy from either but buy 3 per side instead of 2.

Intall 2 per side initially and when they sag in a year or less add the third one.

Or just put all three on at once.

                Re: BC12D bungee tool

Bungies, Should I insist on the newest date of manufacture? The last owner of my plane told me that he bought from a common supplier (can't remember exactly who) but he got bungies that were already a year old according to the bands.... What should I expect?

Is there a particular part number for my '46 BC12D?

Finally, do I hang the airplane or just hold the wheels in with some sort of strap? i was thinking of building a quick 2X4 hoop frame on the floor to keep the wheels from splaying out...

                Thoughts?

                  Re: BC12D bungee tool

I use 3/4" wide cable ties (2 each side) wrapped around the gear/fuselage structure close to the bungees. Quick & simple.

And I would add another vote for Dave's bungee tool. One use and it pays for itself.

I have tied the gear with rope loop. Put stick in the loop and twist the loop tight like safety wire.

Also have parked a car under a wing and supported it with pillows/pads on the roof.

Only remove one cord at a time and it won't drop as much.

Newer is better, suppliers have catalog of pn's that fit.

                      Dave Rude and tribe,

I am going to wait til June when my annual is due then I intend to install new shock cords. Mine are not that bad yet. What about leaving on the old ones which are probably the good rubber and installing one extra shock cord per side? Is this a good idea. or should I just buy three new cords per side. I installed two new bungees per side on 05/13/04 part #9010HD. Not too much sag at this time but starting to sag a bit. More sag on the left side because I am solo a lot.

I will be purchasing a tool from you, Dave in the next month or so.

Question: Dave or anyone...is it possible to remove a bungee without destroying it?
I'm sure this will sound trivial but, I've been pulling mine on and off (for a variety of reasons) for years by simply passing a cord under them and "rolling" 'em off. I use three and rotate the new one onto the bottom and "roll" the older one to the outside ,or #3 position.I like three bungees and always will.

                            yes it does

you've got to tell us more about how you do this

I can't imagine how to do it without great strength

                            please elaborate

Probably the same procedure that they used in the hospital to get my wedding ring off. It hadn't been off for over 20 years. I couldn't see how they did it. Dick

Dave Rude: Okay I'll elaborate,I'm too f^&*'n cheap to buy a tool? Last time I used one Wally Olsen lent me his and I did fine.Seemed I could do the same with a contraption I made from a Hickory handle and a short loop of 1/4" Nylon cord.About an 6" loop? The handle is levered from the seat tube, lift and place the cord onto the trunion. That done I pass another piece of cord (you need to lie on your back)the entire course to "feather" the tension evenly. I buy new ones and put them on the bottom, then set the old ones on last,When I buy another "new set" I move the stack each year. Two things happen this way,I get a "good look "at the undercarriage anually and see that the saftey cables are in good order.
