  • Gascolator location question

I have a question folks. I have a 1940 BC65, and my friend thinks that the engine mount that was put on the plane when it was restored (from parts of three planes), is a Lycoming mount. I didn't think that a Continental would bolt up to the Lycoming mount.
Anyway, the mount for my gascolator is a tab that is welded to the left side diagonal of the engine mount.
I have a photo of a 1940 being built at the factory in Chet Peeks book that shows it mounted on the bottom of the firewall in the center, like they did on the Cessna 140's. Which way is correct for my plane?

    Re: Gascolator location question

Mine is on the tab, 12D-85 short mount. There are gascolators in use that will not mount (easily) on the tab. In my case it puts the gascolator REALLY close to the exhaust manifold as I have split pipes (Luscombe) on the 85. That might bother some folks. I have insulating material between and measured the temp with a thermcouple in flight and it only got up to 100F, so doesn't bother me anymore.
There was aluminium mount left on the firewall when I got the plane; wasn't being used. It was pretty crude so was probably not original.

      Flyguy,
I am getting a set of Luscombe pipes for mine, and I want to move my gascolator down to the bottom center of the firewall. It would then just use a thru-fitting to connect to the fuel line running from the cowl tank. I have seen one 1938 that had the gascolator mounted that way, and it gets the thing FAR away from any heat sources. Brie

I think that might be a good move. All said, I would probably be more comfortable with mine there, if I could do a clean installation. The split pipes seem to work good on the -85 and I have replaced one with a new coated one from Univair and it is holding up well. Fortunatuly I had a Luscombe carb heat muff from the old one. Those things are expensive.

Before you install the gascolator make sure you wait until the exhaust is installed. The original gascolator mount on the diagonal(which is the proper original location)will have to be removed to allow clearance for the heat muff and scat tubing on the pilots side.

            Hi Brie,
I think you are right. As far as I know the Lyc. and Cont. mounts are two separate animals. I'll post some pictures of my 39 Lyc. I think the mount is original. The gascolater is attached to a lug welded to the lower right side of the mount.

                Re: Gascolator location question

My firewall has a one inch (I guess) factory punched hole that is just above where the two diagonals form the "V" at the bottom center of the fuselage just behind the firewall. It is just BEGGING for me to put the spare Cessna 140gascolator that my friend will let me have to make the switch where the hole is punched.
I will take the advice and mount the Luscombe pipes FIRST though. Brie

                  Howard,
Thanks a MILLION for the photos of your O-145. It solved several questions about how to plumb the engine on the replica of the Israeli BL65 that dropped the bombs, (grenades really), on the palistinians during the 1947 war that we are SLOWLY putting together. If you have a shot of the left side of the engine I would appreciate it GREATLY. Brie

Here's a couple more. That aluminum tube around the exhaust pipe is of course ,shall we say, non-standard. The story is that when the plane lived in North Dakota the Gremlins broke into the hangar one night and added a northern heating system because they were tired of 'working' in the cold. It heats a treat! If you would like shots of specific parts or angles let me know. Some cables and hoses are detached and not in their operating positions. Oh, you probably know, the original hot air cans had little scoops sticking out of the cowling.

                        Howard,
In the next day or so, I'll take some photos of spots where we are not SURE we are doing it "factory" and load them up on a Thread that I will call "Israeli warbird". I won't start the thread till I have photos to upload. Brie
