Wonder how all of this will ultimately effect the production of Taylorcraft struts and parts, I sure hope they stay with it but I must admitt it might
be the end of that source, looking at the PMA info on the FAA web site
airframes inc has been removed as a PMA provider for the taylorcraft strut
When I opened the above link and entered the Airframes, Inc numbers for the Taylorcraft struts in the search box on the upper left( I searched each number individually) ( AF-MA-A854 and AF-MA-A815), it took me to indicated approvals of those numbered parts. You can call the following to get the last word from the FAA office in charge of these particular approvals, I would think.
Responsible Office:
Wichita KS FAA Office Tel: (316) 946-4175
Airframes Inc gave loads of notice to this Forum back in December, that the situation was about to change.
So it's old news now.
Let's hope that the new owners (Northern) will grasp the mettle , and get the PMA transferred from Airframes to Northern.
Knowing a little bit about this subject I can tell you that when you "buy" a company or some of the assets of a company, things like the Type Certificate is a proprietery item that can be bought and sold just like a car. The same is true for a Supplemental Type Certifcate (STC). It is property. However, a Parts Manufacturing Approval (PMA) is not property. It is issued by the FAA to an enity. If that business sells out, goes out of business or whatever, the PMA no longer exists. A new producer of that part must apply for a new PMA. The governing Aircraft Certification Office (ACO) may not accept the original reports, drawings and other substantiating documentation in the original form. They may require some revisions. These could be minor or if the PMA was done a long time ago and the engineering is pretty cheesey and your ACO guy has no sense of humor, you basically start from scratch. This can take months. If and when the ACO issues a Design Approval then the whole works goes to the governing Manufacturing Inspection District Office (MIDO) for them to issue the final PMA approval in a Supplement.
We have been down this road over 5,000 times. Our supplements have been consolidated a couple of times. The Suppliments we just recieved on the T-Craft struts were numbers 198 and 199.
So Mike, now that you have your PMA supplement(s) (sounds like health food), does that change the type of paperwork required to install the struts? Have we achieved that most-highly-sought goal of a direct replacement part number that only requires a log entry?
Be nice to me, I'm going to buy your struts.
Darryl

Darryl,
Here is the short version: Log book entry. Keep your invoice from us as part of the aircraft's records in case some AI 15 years from now wants proof of what the part numbers of the struts were and where they came from. Until the revised AD is issued, you will technically have to have our AMOC stating that the struts terminate the AD. Close your log book and forget about it. If someone tells you that is not sufficient, tell them that it is. If they insist that it is not, kindly send them my way and I will endeavor to come up with an intelligent and professional way of telling them to go straight legged to hell.
Love the attitude Mike; how can it be that so many people can look at the same situation and give so many different answers.
This E-LSA switch over is finally settling down, I have been doing a pre-inspection & W & B of these ships ; can you come to our Taylorcraft Foundation forumn , or your rep- at Sun-N-Fun . Friday , 1PM ..

Speaking of attitudes. Did you get my e-mail to you regarding the new AMOC and McAnaul's comments regarding our struts on the new AD? I was going to let you be the hero, but it looks like you are going to let me carry the water and tell everybody.
McAnaul sent us a letter on Jan. 22 which is a revised AMOC which takes in account the expanded model applications. It is available on our web site www.univair.com. In the same letter he says that our struts will be acceptable as terminating action for all applicable models when the new AD is isssued.
