What control wheels do I have? I have not seen any pictures of this style here. They are sort of a banjo style with two sets of wire spokes running out from the hub on the 45 degree radial. Sorry I can not attach photos them here this morning for some reason. Keeps telling me it is not a valid image file. I have tried both .jpeg and .bmp. Are the spokes supposed to be chrome? They have no coating left except for rust, I can get the shaft re-chromed and I think I will do the spokes too, any comments? The hub is covered by a very nice chrome hub cap (disk) with the Taylorcraft logo stamped in to it. Larry

Sounds like the rare banjo DeLuxe wheels. There was two styles, one with spokes, should be 3 or 4 per side, and one with tubes.

Wire spokes, 4 per side, Wheel itself is painted black and rusty but will clean up just fine. The center cap cleaned up like new. I plan on plating the column, was just wondering about what to do with the wire spokes. I have tried again to load a pic. but get the same message. I click on the paper clip above, click on browse, click on the photo that I made small enough, I believe, and get the message," This is not a valid image file". I have posted pics here before but it has been awhile, must be doing something wrong! :tdown:

Solid wire spokes that simply lock in to the hub under the mounting flange and stick in to holes in the wheel at the outside. I will get some pics on here some day to show you that they are really very nice looking and will add snazz when refinished.

I will, my son tells me there is a good shop in Clinton, IA. I will be checking it out, only 30 mins. away. I plan on chrome on the column and spokes with black epoxy on the wheel and hub. I think the black and chrome will look good however a color that goes with the interior would look nice too. LL

I had mine nickeled. The hoop is suppose to be painted a brown color. very rare to find and cool looking.

I like the sound of that, give me a hint as to what shade. This is one of those things I can do while working on the rest of the bird.

I've been procrastinating having a set of round prewar control wheels chromed or nickel plated, whichever is correct, to replace the post war magnesium wheels currently on the plane. I had planed to just have the shafts plated and paint the wheels. Might do something different, but if you come up with a source I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know also Larry. Maybe we can get them all in at the same time. I'm not far east of you...

Got a color picture in the owner's gallery (p.9) of brown round wheels. Don't know if that was original in '39? I was thinking of painting them black until I read Mike's message....? Howard

The full round wheels I think were painted except for the shafts. Nickel was more come pre WWII and I really like the look of it. Chrome did not the norm until after WWII.

The round wheels on my '40 are black put the material seems to be relatively soft and not painted, just made black. I know they are the originals.
