help! need throttle cable

My annual is finally finished! BUT, when they went to run the engine the throttle stuck at full. The cable appears to be jammed or broken.

I need a throttle cable ASAP so I can get this thing airborne. Who's got one?

Take the one you have apart and clean it with spray solvent forced down into the cable and run it back and forth until all the gunk comes out. When you have gotten it to slide smoothly, put some "mouse milk" penetrating oil, or Marvel Mystery oil in it and run it back and forth some more until it is smooth as silk. Then re-install it.

If you are in a hurry you might get this fixed before Aircraft spruce could send you a new one for $5,732.81

I fiddled with it this evening. Found the reason for the jam. In the area where the cable takes a turn to the carb there were no less than 6 or 7 strands of the cable broken. The ends were snagging on the spring outer casing. This cable is shot.

if I had swaging tools and ends I'd whip one up. that's a big "if" though. So frustrating to have put this plane through a 4 month long $8,000+ annual only to be stopped by a measly throttle cable.

so depressing.

I saw those. I guess if I could get it in custom length and they had a PMA number I could do it.

I just wish the cable would have lasted one more day! I'd have gotten it signed off and then if it broke I'd put whatever cable in there I could muster up.

so damn frustrating. anyone wanna buy a Taylorcraft with no throttle control? Fresh out of annual! (almost)

if those dimensions on that page are from end of threaded shaft to base of panel nut in the pushed forward position then the 42" would be perfect.

I need to ask my IA if he will install a non PMA part. Doubt it.

Measure the length of the one you got, so you know which one to order. It may be a "stock" size.

I think that you will find the Univair parts will be FAA/PMA.

I would be very surprized if it were not so.

Ask Univair, it may be that they are approved under some other parts approval scheme like TSO and so on

Here's an idea, let him call Univair and order it, bet it will make a difference if he does it rather than you.

Macfarlane aviation has a nice C-180 cable that is the right length and you can get it approved by field approval. Tim

I looked up that cable on their website and called them. They were able to confirm it is 42" in length from end of threads to base of nut.

PERFECT! My IA says he'll put it on no problems. It is ordered and overnight shipping puts it here tomorrow.

It is a tight fit where the kidney tank is, just put some anti chaff on the cable and allow it to flex. You will need the correct rod end also. I am glad to help. Tim
