  • 2008 Sun -N- Fun

How many are planning to go this year? Judy and I are planning on going. Will probably drive down. We have never been there. We cannot go to Osh this year, so we thought we would try Lakeland. Anybody have any tips for a newbie to Florida?

NOTHIN wrong with the Baby Ace! You will find a lot of Taylorcrafters in the Pietenpol group too. Also a lot of us were in to old English cars and now Miatas!
We like ALL the good stuff.

Yeah, I love all things that fly, each one has their own unique charm. Old english cars? My first car was a 1964 MG Midget. Last year for the roadster, had the side curtains that bolted on, and the convertable top that all folded up and went in the back. Dad brought it home in the back of his pickup truck and we assembled it when I was 14 or 15.... Drove dad nuts with my attempts at bodywork, he would get it all squared away, and then I would try to "help".....

You are all the greatest. English cars. Fixed up a 67 Triumph Spitfire when I was 14. Sold it before I was 16. Dad was worried about the insurance. Love all the old cars too ! See all soon !!!

                    Re: 2008 Sun -N- Fun

A lot of my friends came to me as their kids got close to driving age since I am locally known as something of a car nut (and you thought I was just a nut in general). They ask about what car would be good for a new driver and I always put the Triumph Spitfire right at the top of the list. Same reaction every time....YOU WANT TO PUT A 16 YEAR OLD KID IN A 60s/70s SPORTS CAR!!!!
Then you get them to see the logic. Give the kid a 69 or 70 Spitfire and they will drive it for a week at which point it will break down. They will be working on it till they are 21 and probably won't get it running for more than a week at a time till then. How much of an accident can you have pushing an old Triumph home with a buddy (remember, multiple kids in a car drastically increases the chance of an accident, a Spitfire only carries two! OK, in school we could get in 4, but we were REALLY nuts back then, and a LOT skinnier!)
A side benefit is they will actually learn the basics about cars from window winders to transmission syncro rings and with all the oil on your driveway you will NEVER need to pull the grass out of the cracks in the concrete again.

If you go to Sun & Fun make sure that you go to the flea market tent. Our EAA chapter runs the market. I will be there part time..It is amazing the number of parts, planes, engines, tools and accessories that show up in that tent every year. It is the best part of the show.
