I would like a starter. An 85 hp -12 installation would be great, but a standard starter hits the firewall, replaceing the engine mount means new cowling. "If" it could be done with the existing engine mount it would cost about $16,000. My 150 hour -8 engine might be worth $7000. We have a Champion with a -12 engine on the field. See attached pictures and also see the attached pictures of my -8 showing the firewall clearances. We need a short starter. Any suggestions or comments.

Well, you are the one that knows how bad you want a starter. If it would require switching the engine that may be easier than switching planes. Is it convenience you desire or is it physically difficult for you to start the plane? If you can swing the prop, perhaps a different mag set up or something would help it to start with less effort.

Here's a thought, may be all wet, but my Champ has a small recess built into the firewall just for the generator.

Could the same be done for the starter?

Did you look at the 337's in the reference section? There is one for a -12 engine and a short mount. You would have to modify the STC but it could be done. Tim
