  • no shoulder harness for me :(

My IA won't sign off the Hooker Harnesses in my Tcraft. Says unless he sees some documentation stating that the hooker harness can be installed in a Taylorcraft BC12-D he won't do it.

This annual on my plane is really beginning to depress me. Every time I turn around there is some other issue that can't be signed off.

So either I return the harnesses or wait until after the annual and illegally install them myself.

Did you show you AI the doucumentation from Hooker Harness Inc? Don't need A&P or AI. You can do it yourself. Has this AI ever signed off another Taylorcraft before? What is his background? Has he ever annualed a tube and fabric airplane?

George call Jack Hooker, I know him and he is one straight shooter, also not afraid to show your bright guy where the bear sh*t in the woods. Jack has been doing this for a very long time and will get things right for you; he will have the paper work to show this crack pot you have working on your plane. I believe the paper work is included but talk to Jack at 815-233-5478. As I said "he is fearless".

My IA called Hooker to ask about it and my IA's words to me were

"I'm not satisfied with their answer"

He either needs to see a copy of a 337 if someone else has installed them under a 337 or he won't do it. Plain and simple.

I am about to give up. I suppose I can call my FSDO and maybe get someone to tell him it's ok to do it under a log entry with Hooker harnesses.

              I found this

if he reads that and still won't install them and sign it off I'm really going to lose it.

I can't believe he's running you through the ringer, next time, you pay my way down from Alaska and I'll do your annual and I think it will be easier and besides a trip in the winter down there would be good.

Here's an example of the FAA standing in the way of safety. Face it. The shoulder harness installation is not going to impede airworthiness or safety.

If I'm not mistaken the FAA issued an AC that covers this very subject. I'll take a look around to see if I can dig it up.

Re: no shoulder harness for me

Is this an older harness installation or is it recent and you want him to approve it? If it has been done in the past and there is a logbook entry you should be good to go. If there is no entry, I would just remove them, get the annual completed and then find an A&P that will install them as a minor change per the FAA's own advice. (If he won't do it). This is probably not something an owner can do without an airframe mechanic's sign off.

While this inspection may be causing you to pull your hair out, at least you are getting the thing looked over thoroughly and my thinking is that if you have this mechanic do subsequent annuals they will be much smoother. The first annual on an aircraft is always a paperwork pit for an IA but after that one mostly looks at new AD's, etc. On the one hand the guy is being a pain in the keester but on the other hand he does seem to be doing a thorough inspection. And after this he won't be so unfamiliar with rag and tube planes...

DJ , I am perplexed I had always thought that Hookers came with an STC.

I was planning to order a set for my Champ because of that.

If they don't then I see no need to buy from them if I have to do my own paperwork.

Does Wag-Aero offer a set with an STC?

                          I'll look.

                            Wag-Aero doesn't have a set with STC.

                            How about the factory?

They may have a set with paperwork included.
