Re: How do you use your taylorcraft?

    Mr. Hake,
The elation does continue, that is good news!
I have been seeing the same farms and sights for all my life from the air and it still is an adventure everytime I go up. I have wondered how long it would last,if one day I would head up for a look and I would experience nothing.
Sounds like I don't have to worry?
    Chris.

Re: How do you use your taylorcraft?

I fly on nice days when I have gas money.
I fly in the morning, sometime in the day brake. Best time of the day!
I fly in the late evening in the sunset.
I fly alone unless I take my grandson with me.
I fly to flyinn's and for a burger lunch somethere.
Can I justifie having it, No. but it gives ME pleasure!
I know what is a selfish and weak argument, but I love flying it.
Maybe it is time to sell her.
So when the main bearing went bad in the wifes car, I did the work.
cost $350 with life time warranty
Savings $500 instead of a new old motor instaled by me.
A saving off $2500 instead of rebuild instaled by me.
A savings off $5500 instead of rebuid instaled be a shop!

People have airplanes like Taylorcrafts for the same reason people have sailboats. They want to get somewhere FAST !!!!(;f

My advice is to get a new family! If that is not feasable, tell them you are flying a piece of history, and it is an investment! If you don't brake it or bend it, it is bound to appreciate!!!

Print them out a copy of a little poem called 'High Flight' by John Gillespie Magee Jr.. and ask the family to read it. No other justification needed.

I'd put it up here but not sure of the copyright.

Re: How do you use your taylorcraft?

I have a new use for the Taylorcraft:

I discover country stores by air.

On the eastern shore of Maryland (the other side of the bay from Washington DC), the small towns are all serviced by the plain old fashioned country store. It's part deli, grocery store, Sears Roebuck, a liquor store, auto parts, deer check in station, gun repair shop, ---well you get the idea.

So what I do is find a small town by the water, locate the country store in town, swoop down and land (I'm on floats) then beach the plane and walk the block or two to the country store. I meet some really great folks, take some for a ride maybe, buy a candy bar and Coke, then blast back into the air. Many of these small towns have great Mom and Pop restaurants that serve the worlds best seafood or home cooked meal.

I burn 6 gallons an hour or Mogas, so a typical "country store discovery flight" is about $40. Thats a bargain to escape the rat race for an afternoon.

Tell your family that you need the plane to find country stores.

                I like Suzy's idea...get a new family

I don’t know about the rest of you‘all but I find peace and solace when I am up there in God’s atmosphere. Sometimes I listen to music or just thank God (pray) for what I have.
I am not a religious man because I think formal religion has too many restrictions but that does not mean I don’t talk to him/her either.

What I use my plane for?
Currently because it is 30 degrees or less in Denver and we're getting snow every few days -- I'm using my L2A as a large dust magnet and hangar filler. Usually it's best at making $50.00 hamburger and pancake runs on weekends. BUT, given the current price of gas... the hamburgers are running about $60.00, I suppose.
With a 14 gallon L2A... literally "the skies the limit" as anything further requires too much gas... so on occassion it's just a touch and go merry go-round-horse, also.

A man should always have two airplanes before he gets married. Then when he sells one of them, he'll always be able to boast about the incredible sacrifice he made.

Re: How do you use your taylorcraft?

OK, all those sites and sounds and smells (love that old airplane smell) are true for me too.

Yet, making a nice landing in a taildragger is the biggest high that I can experience in a hobby. And every landing feels better than the last when I shut her off and the gyros are spinning down. I always just sit there and relive the landing, actually critiquing my technique.

You see, up until five years ago, I thought tailwheel pilots were supermen.

                          Now, I are one.

                          It don't git no better.

Unless you are sharing it with someone who also appreciates old airplanes.
