exhaust clearance question

Realizing I know about enough to make myself dangerous I thought I would ask what the clearance should be or is relating to the fit between the number 4 cylinder (A-65 forward left cylinder) push rod tube and the exhaust pipe. It seems to be extremely tight and it appears, by the scars on the tube, that they are touching. I am guessing that they probably shouldn't be but I don't think that there is any play in the exhaust system to be able to move it. The exhaust is a taylorcraft exhaust from Wag-areo. Any thoughts or input is always greatly appreciated.

My is tight but doesn't tough and its a wag-areo unit about 6 years old.

Mine scrape the pushrod tube everytime I have to remove them, you only need about 1/8" as a min. I perfer 1/4" but an 1/8 will do. I am using aeronca chief exhaust, and it has the same problem, its similar to Cessna 150 stuff. Tim

I do a bit of "bright work" on the flange, ( THEY are all thicker than original. ) with a die grinder, yes they fit tight and have to be "tipped" into place a smack with a rubber mallet works too. make sure the gaskets are in place prior to smacking it into place. Heard tell about a fellow that missed this gasket placement (once in his life).

Thanks for the replies. We managed to get enough clearance where I can fit a piece of paper between the exhaust and tube. At least its not touching. I wanted to whack the exhaust with a ball peen hammer to dent the thing enough to improve clearance but my IA wouldn't give me the key to his tool chest.

aha , not the flange the drop tube was off a bit. Whacking is good sometimes
