  • Fairlead bushings

Ordered a couple of new fairlead bushings from the factory, and where the originals were held in by a wire on each side, these ones are smooth. How do they attach? Are they ment to glued, and if so, with what?

    Thanks

Post a pic, I used cub style, had a little cuttin and welding to make them fit but they used a spiral ring to hold them in. Tim

      Re: Fairlead bushings

I''ll try do take a pic tonite or tomorrow. The old ones I have sound like you described, they have a wire ring on each end that hold them in place. The new ones that I recieved from the factory are smooth and are cut from a long tube into the smaller bushings, but there is nothing on each end to hold them in the welded on fairlead to the fuselage such as a larger lip or a cutin for a wire to go into.

They are glued in with contact adhesive. The originals had a groove machined in them and held in with a snap ring.

          Ryan,

Chuck a bolt into a electric drill, and use the threads on the bolt to clamp the plastic sleeve. Put the drill in a vise and fire it up.

I used a hacksaw blade (handheld) to cut my own grooves.

          Or glue it in.

            Re: Fairlead bushings

There's a good thread on fairleads. Search "fairleads" and you'll find it. Bob Gustafson ("mulwyk") uses Piper and modifies them. Look for his posts. There are good ideas there. Many planes do not have fuselage fairleads, wrongly I'm sure, but they don't seem necessary and would be very hard to retrofit unless you're a midget, though the aileron cables do require them.
