  • Anouncing a new restoration project

G-BRIH, formerley NC43762, has completed her last flight before undergoing restoration. I have been planning to take IH off line for a couple of years and now that the clocks have changed and the nights draw in, it's time to begin the project.

Following a short 20 minute flight, filmed and photographed by fellow Taylorcrafters the ceremony of cutting the fabric to officially start the project was duly carried out under the stormy skies at Leicester.

For anyone who followed Rob Lees beautiful restoration of G-BREY, I will be doing much the same to IH. After 61 years she has managed to put on a bit of weight and needs a bit of TLC in one or two areas. Apart from new fabric, the other major works will include new cowlings, smaller sky light, Harer STC modes to allow an increase in AUW to 1280 lbs (she already has an 85 HP engine) and new radio fit. I'm sure that I'll find unexpected issues that need addressing and I need to learn the skills to fabric and paint her, but that's all part of the fun.

I've attached a picture from the last flight and the fabric cutting, which I hope aren't too big. I'll post pictures regularly and keep people up to date with progress as it happens and I'm sure there will be questions galore.

In the mean time, I'll be flying Rob's second aircraft G-BRPX - can't be bad.

    Blue skies
    Andy.

Keep us informed Andy! It'll be great to follow your adventure. Are you going to paint her the same or choose a different paint scheme?

        Andy,

        Why a smaller skylite?

Re: Anouncing a new restoration project

          Why a smaller skylight?

At the moment the skylight extends back to the trailing edge of the wing which is overkill, it's beyond the rear spar crossmember so supporting the rear part of the skylight is a bit of a mash up. You also don't get any improvement in rear visibility but you do get a hell of a greenhouse in the summer.

The other factor is weight - one of the main aims is to remove 50 lbs in weight so if I can simplify and reduce the size and number of heavier components I will (within reason of course).

As for the paint scheme it will be Stits Pontiac Red with Insignia White lining. Rob suggested that I paint it the same as BREY, but I suspect he just wants me to get blamed for all his stunts.

                  Andy,

Does that mean you can paint his registration on also?

I think you've given me an idea John.

p.s. Forest - I'll do my best for IH after all you signed off her export C of A.

Looking forward to following your progress. I am currently restoring N43754. Good chance they weren't to far from each other in '46. Good Luck!

                        Ryan,

First flight was on 8th April 1946 with Reece Edwards at the controls. I know that BREY is abount 120 airframes before mine and BREYs first flight was 1st April 1946 so chances are yorurs was airbourne within a day or two.

They may have been mates on the production line.

Mine flew on April 4th, log book says for about 45 min. She flew again later that day and was shipped out two days later. Always intresting to hear this stuff.

Not if your aircraft is covered with Razor back you don't - the stuff is indestructable!
