  • Trailering Wings

Can somebody get me the dimensions of the wing attachement hardware on the root of the wing? I will be placing two wings in individual crates for transport from Seattle to Minneapolis. I would like to bolt the wings in on the root end only and let the outboard portion of the wings float on padding. Currently the aircraft is sailing from Alaska to Seattle and will be picked up next week.

    Thanks

Better way might be to make hard points for the spar attach fittings at the wing root and a second set of connections at the strut attach. DON'T bolt the strut attach directly! Make a hard point attach in the bottom of the crate and use short links to the wing so the distance from the root to the strut attach isn't critical. Make sure the wing can’t swing fore and aft or up and down. That way the wing will be secure in the crate but deflections of the crate from handling can't be passed into the wing. You might be able to build a single crate with the wings attached to both the crate top and bottom and save some shipping cost.

If you are moving them yourself in a trailer you can insure YOU don't abuse them. I just strapped mine (CAREFULLY) on some matresses with some thin foam cussions and Luan ply over it on top (to spread the strap load). I trucked them to the airport going slow, avoiding rough road sections and I stopped several times to check for anything getting loose. Came through without a scratch.

Bungees. Support the wings underneath with foam rubber or mattresses, hook bungees into the jury strut fittings and the butt attach fittings, or around a fixture bolted to those fittings. Have some kind of eyebolt or hole to anchor the bungee to the crate. Pre-load the bungees in directions opposite to the expected normal paths of divergence, but obviously not too tight.

I am in Seattle. My shop is about an 1hrs drive from downtown. Call me if you need anything, want to visit, or go flying.

The coolest way I've seen wings packaged was in a crate, wrapped with plastic, set on foam pads, and the perimeter space filled with expanding spray foam.

          Joe,
The front spar is 1", the rear 3/4". A little over 30" between. I'd support the tip as much as the root.

              Hey Kevin,

Yup, I moved back to WA. Tx was just a bit too hot and flat for me. The F19 now belongs to a real nice fella in Kansas and I have a Supercub now. I opened my own shop and other than all the bookkeeping and taxes I love it.

                Jason,
Nice cub. How about a little info on it? Any military history? I hope to restore one of the L-birds someday.
                Thanks, Pete

It's great to hear from ya Jason. It sounds like your doing well...the taxes and bookkeeping are not always my strong suit...but I do my best. Give me a call sometime.

                    sorry about hijacking this thread

Its a 54' L21B that served in Italy from the mid 50's to the late 70's

I have the Italian logs and she is in pretty decent shape for a 20 year old dope cover job. Still has the 0-290d2 and the smaller AM series Sensenich prop. I put safety cables and the 31" bushwheels on. This airplane is very straight with no major dammage history and less than 3000 hrs total time.
