I was planning on bidding on the Taylorcraft fire extinguisher on eBay but I noticed that taylorcraft65 and fokkerc1 are already in a bidding war for it. Who are you guys and whoever gets it how about we make some replicas? I have been trying for years to get Forrest to pull one from the barn for me (can't lay any blame here, struts are WAY more important than a non-working fire extinguisher). I was planning on modifying a Halon extinguisher to hide inside one of the original brass ones. I bet with my lathe and some brass tube we could make replicas of that thing if we don't spend all our money on eBay.

I am Taylorcraft65. I have one already for my BC-65 but need one for the model A. I think the one on e-bay is out of my price range now.

The one I have I actually found in an antique shop for $20.00 and it was in great shape with the data plate and mount. Polished up it looks brand new.

Stop at an antique shop occasionally you might get lucky and find one.

I have been looking for several years but no luck. Forrest says he has some in the barn but there hasn't been any interest in them from anyone else so they must be buried pretty deep. Do you have good measurements of yours and good pictures so I could build a replica? I would rally like to put a real extinguisher inside just in case I actually ever needed one.
Is the other guy bidding a Taylorcrafter?

I can take pictures and take some measurements for you. I don't know anything about anyone on e-bay. I do know that custom and antique motorcycle builders like to modify them and use them as oil tanks or something.

Go on Ebay and type in "brass fire extinguisher". There's bunches of them there for short money. I've picked up several over the years. I got one once with the original paper tag on it. I sold it to Frank Pavliga for some Waco project that he was working on.

Have you got a photo of an original? Glen put me on to "brass fire extinguisher" on eBay and they look to be pretty common for about $10 each. Only problem is there is a BUNCH of different types. Which one went in the Taylorcraft?

Eric,
Is yours really only 5 1/2" long by 1 1/2" diameter? It looked larger in the old photos. I guess if you have a fire in the cockpit bigger than a Zipo flame it doesn't much matter as small as a Taylorcraft cockpit is.
No way I can put a Haylon unit in one that small.

Anybody else have dimensions on theirs? Other brands original besides Merlite?

My fire extiguisher is 3.5" in cross-section and 11" long, 14" including the T handle.

Pretty sure I have seen "PYRENE" listed as the extinguisher supplied with most 20's thru 40's aircraft.

In this area, the going price for the Pyrene (sp?) brass fire extinguishers at the engine shows is $8.00. I tossed my last one in the dump.

Yes, I beleive that is the correct one. Mine is a Pyrene.

A Zippo is a small pocket cigarette lighter that was EVERYWHERE around WW-II. It has a flame about half again bigger than a paper match. Any fire bigger than that in a Taylorcraft cockpit would probably qualify as a conflagration.
