    Re: Sold My Plane

Almost bought a taildraggin 150 (1962 old style) all redone with 160 hp a few years back. Doctor was buying a 180 for more room. It was in grear shape but I hestitated and lost it. It sold in two days on trade a plane. It would have been alot of fun. Horse power is a must!

        Re: Sold My Plane

Taildraggers are nice to look at and they do add a lot of spice to flying small planes however I guess that I have had my fill of the kind of excitement that comes from flying and owning one.

Victor Bravo I am pretty sure that over the years I have bought some parts from you for my taylorcraft on ebay at one time or another.

            Re: Sold My Plane

When Erney Bryant sold his Taylorcraft for a 48 Cessna 170 (taildrager 4 seater that looks a LOT like a Taylorcraft) he painted it in a Taylorcraft color scheme. He has flown with the local Taylorcrafts several times and we look at it as sort of the "Baby Huey" of the local Taylorcrafts. In flight it's hard to tell from one, just bigger. It's hard to give up a good thing. I still think he really misses his great Taylorcraft.

I own both. Cessna 150 insurance is lots more than the Taylorcraft.
Annual too. Not complaining. Bought the 150 so that the grandkids could get the full benefit of an electrical system, radios, transponders and the like.

I wish I had your insurance company. Through AOPA I was paying $940 for the taylorcraft and they told me that they were about it increase my rates to over $1000 when I sold the plane.

I have the exact same coverage for my 150 from AOPA with the same hull coverage and pay $519. Tail draggers must be more expensive when everything else is equal.

As far as my annual goes all the mechanics around here are afraid of fabric planes and always charged me more for the annual. A 150 is no big deal to them.

Back when I bought my F-19 the Taylorcraft Company was still in business. I could call the factory get advice and order what I needed.

Since they shut down I searched a long time for Taylorcraft parts that I could not buy because they did not exist, so in that regard the Cessna is more expensive. However I am very glad to not have to go to engineering school anymore so that I could be able to fabricate my own F-19 parts.

It seems to me that to those who possess the skills making your own parts and keeping a Taylorcraft alive is a big part of the fun. I can't weld or form metal. I don't like to work with fiberglass. It is much easier for me to open a manual figure out the part number and make my order and bolt it up.

Hopefully one day when I am a millionaire I can buy a nice newer or hopefully a new Taylorcraft and I can rejoin in the fun.

Last weekend, I went to BTR and back to 1T8 in my "Classic" C210E in 5 hours...bored all of the way with the autopilot, GPS, and ATC control (had to return my brother home after he dropped off his 1952 BE35 for Mark to annual . 1st thing back was picking up on my "Antique" NC43306. Good luck on your C150...my C210 just hauls parts and does taxi service...I like the low and slow...I like the smell of paint and wax. Doc

To me the biggest thing is being able to fly. My Taylorcraft left me grounded to many times for to many years waiting for parts or for someone to make repairs. I am happy to be in the sky again.

Well, still being able to fly is what my Taylorcraft is all about. These days (I'm 77 today and my steed will be 67 in July) I fly as a sport pilot, so the Cessnas are out of bounds. However, I did like flying the C140, C170, C180 and C195 -- fine tail draggers all. Good flying with your 150.

Several years ago before I turned sport pilot, I had a chance to buy a 1962 150 with 180hp cs prop all redone, new paint etc. It was reconfigured as a tail dragger. A doctor had it and was moving to a 180 to carry his "stuff". I hesitated four hours and lost it. The buyer paid 38,500.00. Always regretted it as it would have been alot of fun. To me, horsepower is king, but my taylorcraft sure beats not flying at all! My favorite airplane is the 180 Cessna, then a stearman which was easier to fly than I had been told. I liked the looks of the straight tail 150!

                                Re: Sold My Plane

Once a person crawls into the cockpit of any flying machine and gets it airborne and safely back, that person is so set apart from 99.9% of the rest of humanity that debating about what particular ship it is misses the point. We are doing something that has only been possible in the past 100+ years of mankind's history.

The Taylorcraft is an amazing plane. Ever see a 747 land on a gravel bar in Alaska and get home safely later that day? In a plane that is 60-70 years old to boot and still strong and airworthy.

The C-150 has taught thousands to fly and has proven to be very durable and safe. It seems to be the perfect fit for Sky High right now for what his mission is. Enjoy it, man. When life slows down, maybe you get the itch for another one of the classics once again. But for now, it is your perfect match.
