  • Taylorcraft winner at Oshkosh

    Congratulations to Joel Severinghaus for winning the Bronze Lindy at Oshkosh for Classic Best in Class (0 to 80 horsepower).

    The workmanship is excellent, and I had the pleasure of buying him a beer in celebration!

        Gee, Robert. Do you make it every year to OSH?

        I live 632 driving miles away and I can't seem to make it with all the junk that comes up in my life. Haven't been there since '02 or '03.

        Thankfully, I had 13 years in a row a while back.

          Homage to the Taylorcraft
          There is something about the Taylorcraft profile that is most pleasing. The nose seems stubbier than it should be but just long enough to give this plane a hearty chin and a "I think I can" profile. The long body and gear sets the plane in a most steady and reasoned stance. And then... there are those wings. These are graceful branches of indusrial perfection. Nothing looks like a Taylorcraft. It sucks eyes away from the occasional Cub and without the shiny pretense of the Luscombe or Cessna 140. It is compotent in all of its visages. It says something about flying that is at once both romantic and permenant. It is wonderfully proportioned and skillfully designed. I love the way it carries itself and me inside it. I love the sweet beauty. It says...
          "come on over and look at me"... but in a matter-of-fact whisper. It says I am valiant and reliable and you can trust me. Come... fly me. Come on there is fun to be had and things to see... and I will take you.

          Apparently others feel the same aesthetic as me and reward the craftsmen that preserve it too. It is a beauty that abides and crosses generations and memories while just sitting on the ramp.
          With regards;
          Ed O'Brien

            No, not every year, Jack, but as many as I can. I've been to all but six in the last 23 years. I quite like the high winter deserts of Utah & Arizona too, so sometimes I do one and not the other (although this year I did both in separate trips).

            Ed, you've hit the nail on the head...I'd add that in performance terms, the Taylorcraft excels at no single thing, but as a comprimise like most aeroplanes, it does everything brilliantly.

                    Robert and Carl;
                    I thank you for your compliments. I think that in life there are very few people and fewer things which are noble, loyal, and humble. My dogs are. Those heroric figures that I admire most, certainly display these attributes. My Grandchildren do the same thing for me. My Taylorcraft too. Your planes also, I imagine. We like this combination of nobility and humility... in people and we feel the same about this object, this thing, which evokes poetry. There is a quote about opera which I think appropriate here: "It alone takes me where I could never go, myself." So too with the Taylorcraft.

                      I have had the T-Craft below as my screensaver for some time now. I just think it has to be the most attractive aircraft I have ever seen. The paintscheme proportions and angles are perfect and whoever owns this is one very lucky person....

                      Is he resident on this forum?

                          I haven't heard from Chris in a while. One of the last things I heard from him was back in the winter after he cracked the bungee strut on the landing gear while flying on ski's. Hope all is ok with him.
