  • Dopey Advice?

    Hi all,

Any advice for coaxing the few stray pinked edge titties that popped up during the butyrate coats to be persuaded to lie back down and rest? Tried the iron at 225 with no luck.

Leave the iron there longer or go hotter. They should lay down. If all else fails trim or sand them off.

I tried the hotter iron, the little devils stay down until you are not looking and then pop back up....I ended up slipping Super Seam Cement under the offending pinks with a dulled exacto blade. That fixed'em. Making good progress. Ready for silver this weekend.

A trick I learned is to apply tapes after you have a build up of nitrate or poly-brush base that has a shine and I prefer to spray. That garuntees that the base fabric is fully sealed and has enough material on the fabric for proper adhesion. Same theory applies when you are covering any large solid surface such as plywood skins or leading edges.

          Thanx Mike!
What you say makes perfect sense. This is my first Ceconite/dope job and I am trying to "go by the book" so to speak. I did lay the tapes into a really wet coat of nitrate, but may be brushing it out too much after. It is fun and I just love that antique nitrate smell.

            Re: Dopey Advice?

            Mike,
there is a 100 differnent ways to do it and still be right...or at least not wrong. I told a couple of people to cover only one surface at a time finsih tapes and everything all the way up until ready for silver starting with the easiest ones first. This way you get to practice on the easy pieces and learn tips & tricks along the way as well as having time to ask anyone and everyone you can for advise along the way. Once you get everything covered up to this point you can always go back without a lot of effort or heartache and redo some of your first pieces to make them look a little better.
Now, one other tip which may help you with the finish tape edges is to iron them at a low to medieum heat setting before you try to apply them to the surface,be careful when handling them so you don't fold or crease them also. Another trick is to always try to hang your tape rolls on a wall peg or lay them upright. When you lay your tape rolls down on there sides it cause the "Z" pinked edges to get bent and creased causing them to stick up when you try to apply them. Hope this helps.

              Kevin,

Thanx for the tips! I started with envelopes, tried to make them look decent, couldn't, and ended up cutting them off late one nite. I redid all tail surfaces via "blanket" method which turned out great and I believe even quicker than using envelopes. I could not for the life of me get the seams on the envelopes to lay anywheres near straight and pucker-free.

I am at a standstill again until we can sort out what happened to my Rand-O-Fill from Aircraft Technical Support. I ordered and took delivery of the whole covering "kit" last June and only realized two nites ago that I am missing the (2) 5 gal pails of Silver. Jim & Dondi are up at Oshkosh and will look into it when they get back next week.

              Are you flying Crispy yet?

                Mike,
The envelopes are pretty easy once you figure out how to pull your seams where you want them with your iron. The blanket method is neater in the end anyway if you take your time trimming.
AS FOR CRISPY.......THAT'S A STORY I DON'T YET HAVE THE HEART TO TELL BUT I WILL TELL IT SOON.

                    Re: Dopey Advice?

Crispy wound up over a bank on her nose because of circumstances beyond human control.....if everyone doesn't mind I would like to leave it at that. The fuslage has heavy damage from the front gear attachments forward, both gear legs wiped out, cowl, boot cowl, nose bowl,& prop all destroyed. No strut damage but the rear spar on the left wing is cracked at the butt end. I'm looking now for just the right fuslage and then you will see her start over again but I'm thinking about waiting until I get these two almost complete birds out of my shop and then working full time on Crispy until she's done again.
