  • Wood Prop Repair - ATTN MIKE REDPATH

Mike Redpath... or anyone who knows.

Can one layer of laminate be replaced and returned to service by a prop repair station?

Can this be done by an A&P under AC 43.13?

I have a sensenich W7244 prop that is in good shape but one layer of lamination has some cracks that I think are not airworthy. It is the forward layer and cracks appear to be weather cracks. I do not think they go into the aft layers of laminate and perhaps are not too deep. It was refinished and flown this way for a couple hundred hours with no problem. The owner removed it when he was able to buy a metal prop.

Can only be done by a certified repair station. There is only 2 I know of in the country. One is Sensenich and the other is Guy Watson of Watson Propellers, a part of the Watsonville Air Museum in CA. It can be done, but it is a PIA and will cost 75% or more as compared to a new one. You will do better to sell it on ebay as a wall hanger and buy a new one.

Used to, a mechanic could make in field repairs on wood propellers per CAM 18 or AC43, but they took all of that out when they issued 43.13 1B. Only thing that can be done in the field now is refinish and rebalance. Everything else is now a CLass 1 repair only accomplished by a Part 45 repair station.

      Hi Terry,

Guy Watson is at the Ole Fahlin Memorial Prop Shop located in San Martin, CA. It's a part of the Wings of History Museum there. He worked for many years with Ole Fahlin building and repairing wood props. Guy can give you a good idea of what is possible with a phone call. He's an FAA Repair Station and does superb work. And his prices are extremely reasonable. Very nice man and very helpful.

You can contact the museum to get Guy's phone and email information. He's not at the Museum every day but they can tell you his schedule.
