  • Bendix Scintilla SF4R internal timing

Does anyone know what the correct orientation of the mag drive gear to distributor gear is? The drive gear has a notch on one internal tooth, and the distributor gear has a notch for the timing pin on the cover. I would expect to see a mark on the distributor gear between 2 gear teeth, but there are only a few radial marks on this phenolic gear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,
    John

    Hey John,

From the 1943 version of the Bendix-Scintilla Magneto Manual:

    Section VI: Reassembly

"...Then engage the magnet with the front end plate, having the bevelled tooth of the small gear meshed with the mark (R) on the large gear for clockwise rotation or mark (L) for anticlockwise rotation"

These mags are pretty simple but I don't fool around with them as there are lots of things that can get screwed up. My SF4 mags were overhauled by Al Marcucci of Savage Magneto Service. He's not the cheapest shop... but he is very good.

Fresno Airmotive or Robert Weber - both are in trade-a-plane should have manuals. Dave
