Do any of you use the Brackett air cleaners? If so, is it suppose to stick out the front of the air cleaner fairing, or sit behind it? If it is suppose to stick out, the opening in the fairing must be enlarged quite a bit, and I don't want to start cutting my new 1313-1 fairing until I'm sure.

      Re: Brackett Air Cleaners

      Bob,

Walter's cowl has been modified to enclose the air filter. Mine has not. In the attached picture, which I admit isn't very good, you can faintly see that the lower portion of the air filter sticks out just a little beyond the cowl. If you look closely, you can see that there is no sheet metal between the back/lower portion of the filter and the carb alt air intake tube. That is because my airplane is missing the fairing that encloses and streamlines this aerodynamic mess. If you find a good used fairing, buy two and I will take one off your hands. I have looked for years and can't find one at a price I am willing to pay.

The guy at St. Louis Aircraft Metal Arts makes them but I will not do business with him. Caveat emptor! http://www.liming.org/aircraftmetalarts/

Thanks guys. I'll try and pound out a fairing like Walter has. ( I didn't have anything better to do for the next couple of weeks!)

Well I have not heard of anyone getting a K&N approved for aircraft use, something about the oil and carb fires, that is what FSDO told me a few years ago, I have the old style airbox and it broke up during last summers flying spree, so I had to get my spare and get it installed, I would use the 3/8 inch U channel on the plate that mounts the assemble to give it some space behind it and have rivnuts installed to make installation of the bracket assembly easier.

Horse Puckey! Ask the FSDO about the huge inlet barrier filters STC'd for the engine air intake on turbine helicopters by my day-job employer, a company called FDC/aerofilter. This is a fabric/oil type filter similar to the K&N unit. I dare say a 900 horse turbine helicopter has more fuel and oxygen lurking behind that filter than an A-65! The FDC unit is the first ever inlet filter that is an integral part of the original production type certificate on a turbine helicopter (Sikorsky S-76C+)

The Apache Helicopter has 2 K&N filters also, but until someone is willing to fork over the money to get the STC like bracket did for a t-craft, then the options are limited. Tim

                  Re: Brackett Air Cleaners

You are correct about the cost of STC'ing an air filter. My point was that the FSDO gave you an incorrect answer to the question of why a K&N type filter was not going to be approved.

Whats real funny, is that FSDO is not involved in the stc process, the ACO is the approving agency. I think that it was just an inspector trying to give me a hard time. Tim

Getting back to the original thread subject, I upgraded to the Brackett the last time around. Not sorry. Installed very quickly, and total product is way better than the original screen. Don't know why you would want anything else. Tight fit behind that cover tho'

I have the Brackett Filter and am very happy with it. No problems after appx 270 hours.

After a weeks work I think I came up with a solution. Note the extra room so that the aircleaner won't rub on the fairing

That is a real neat job, mine was pretty rough had to use a little filler to dress it up for painting
