  • 1940 Bl65 To Bc65

Hi Guys, how hard and what is the process to change a 1940 BL 65 to a BC 65, I'm looking at a project plane and the fellow has a Cont. A-65 and mount and no Lycoming. Also he has miss placed the airworthiness cert how hard is it to get a duplicate cert.?

If the type certificate data sheet list bc65 and bl65 then all that is required is just a log entry.

But I just looked and they are on diff TCDS so scratch that idea.

You may want to try a field approval.

I dont recall how to replace the AW cert.

    Dave.

There is the famous Factory Letter from Mrs. Feris that allows you to change the engine.

I believe your IA mechanic should read this letter (available from the Foundation), and sign off the logbook as a minor alteration per APPROVED FACTORY DATA.

If your IA will not do this, I would look for another IA rather than start in with FAA involvement.

Thanks Guys, I kind of thought it shouldn't be too hard, No problem with my IA Bill, and if its a minor alteration then an A&P can sign it off. I'm also thinking of certifying it experimental that way I could put an 0-200 which I have on it and install any prop I'd plus I could then sign off the annual condition inspection myself being I'm an A&P.
But first gota look at it and decide if its worth it.
        Thanks GB

You can order the CD on the aircraft from the FAA web site http://162.58.35.241/e.gov/ND/airrecordsND.asp-- Costs $10 and the airworthiness certificate you can print as well as all the major repairs to the aircraft. Worth doing before you purchase.

Hi Dan thanks, yes I've ordered the records CD. Can you really print the airworthiness from the records? If that possible that would be great.

What do you guys think of going the experimental route? My thinking is that these old planes aren't for the most part going to be used for commerical purposes any more, thus with the experimental AW one has the freedom to install other engines, props, wheels and brakes, electrical systems, batteries, instruments, radios and GPS, per ones liking. Plus annuals can be completed per repairman or A&P.

              GB,
I'm going back and forth on it...but from what I'm hearing, it's getting way tougher to get it to "experimental homebuilt" status, and that's the only way I'd go. That seems to be a pretty big topic anymore, and I'd take it up with your PMI before I started much of anything toward that direction...it'd be really bad to get caught in "limbo"..half way there and not able to come back.. I agree with all the positive aspects of that catagory, and think it would make the airplane safer in alot of ways, but it may not be as easy to do as it was a few, or even a couple years ago.

Thanks JH, I'll check that out before I get to far into it, thats kind of like the gov if its a good thing then they'll stop it .

                  Re: 1940 Bl65 To Bc65

If the airplane has had a permanent airworthiness certificate issued make a call to the local FSDO, and ask for a replacement. It should not be a big deal.
For the engine change have your mechanic call his PMI and look the records up for N29815. It had the engine change done long enough ago to use for approved data. I've also done it under a field approval with using the letter Bill mentioned, but the approved data is the way to go. Tom
