  • L2 with Battery/radio set up

    Tribe
    I'm fixing up a no-electric L2. Next month I want to put in a King KY-96 and Transponder/encoder. I'm looking for pictures.

I want to run this unit on a battery/with recharger set up. I'd appreciate pictures of your set-up and real world information on how long a big gel-cell versus smaller motorcycle battery, will run.

What's the best set up for keeping my head up, keep it light, not mess-up the center of gravity too bad, easy to use the dials, and not mess up the stock panel too much, you know... all that stuff. Let me know how you guys have solved the issues and I appreciate the input. Pictures are particularly appreciated. I've seen a couple of pix in the galleries but haven't found what I'm looking for quite yet.
    Thanks and with regards;

Re: L2 with Battery/radio set up

I have a 337 for a 7ah sealed lead acid battery (no vent required) and the installation of a microair radio. The battery is the same as what the model airplane guys use and that is in some emergency lights. I have flown 25 hours on 1 charge. You can get a solar panel battery charger which will maintain your charge if you are parked outside. I got the radio approved in 1999, and I used a billet aluminum batter tray and mounted it to the floor board. I can get pics if anyone wants. Tim

I use a 7ah dry cell battery from Batteries Plus, see the attached pictures, it drives my transceiver and T&B good for 300 recharges. note the radio shop connectors glued to the battery

Pictures are good. ASTJP2 or anybody else please, I'm looking for the best idea here. I've got big feet, so the between the legs mounted to the floor thing might not work for me. Thanks again and with regards; ED OBRIEN

          Ed,

If I remember I will try and take some pictures for you tomorrow when I go to the airport. Mine is an in-dash Microair with two sealed batteries in a box under the left front seat. Two plugs in front, use one until it is time to change then just switch the plug over. I have never really needed to switch as the Microair seems to run forever on the one battery. The prior owner did this, I have the paperwork in the file. I don't have a transponder, I just got a waiver at the local Class C if I need to go there. I try to keep it as original as possible.
          Cheers,
          Marty

Re: L2 with Battery/radio set up

I see by your picture that you have a Back-Light? Does this go on when you put it in reverse? Thanks so much for the pics. You and Marty Towsley have been kind to respond.
I appreciate the help so very much. With regards; ED OBRIEN

                  Ed,

Your pictures, diagrams and paperwork went into the mail yesterday. I was out-of-town for the weekend and did not get a chance to mail it then. Should be there in two or three days.
                  Cheers,
                  Marty

Re: L2 with Battery/radio set up

Hopefully I will never find out about hooking up the battery backwards, I am afraid it might smoke the radio. Tim
