Can anyone tell me if the L2M is certified for flight without the door?
I would like to remove mine from time to time if it is legal and safe.
As well are there any mods for a sliding window on door or fold out windows on both sides?
    thanks Chris

Don't know about flying without the door but all model "D"s were built with sliding windows on both sides. What is the serial number of your ship? Dick

Thanks. What you have is a converted TG-6. It should have been registered a a DC-65. You should have a straight back and the rear seat should be almost identical to the front bur slightly larger. It was built with spoilers. Dick

          Re: L2m Door Removal

so what do I call this plane Dick? Isn't it sort of a nothing?
What can I do about the windows.the port side is a pop out and the starboard is fixed.
You know of any with them folded out to a latch on the wing...ala cub or is it easy to turn the door into a slider window?
It would be nice to have some ventalation on our 110 degree days and still appear somewhat factory.
I can't really show this plane can I since it is not what it was built as nor was it built or used as what it appears now and what do you label it at a fly in?
          Thanks Dick..........Chris

Chris. The TG-6 was built right after the 0-57 block why not do it as an Y0-57. they were done in OD with the star with the red center. In fact if you do that then the boot cowl wauld say 42-455. This is the AAC serial number for the last of the YO-57's The taylorcraft serial number for it wae 4011 so you would be close. As for your windows. The door and left side window were sliders. Look at the top and bottom of the opening and see if the tracks are still there. If you want to verify that your fuselage is correct look at the front spar carrythru. You should find cutoff tubes on both sides pointing down at about a 45 degree angle. If your ship is flyable then I wouldn't worry a lot about the small stuff. Dick

I don;t know about legal, but we sold an L-2M to a guy back in the mid 90's and one day he was taking a friend for a ride in the front seat and said "what does this red knob do"......... and proceded to pull it. Door was found a couple days later by a farmer in his creek withthe top half broke off but otherwise in perfect shape.

Dick youi have me wondering now. I will go look at the fuselage tomorrow.
I know there are no tracks in the frame for a slider....the window slid aft to open from the way you said track is on top and bottom?

Chris, when the Army was looking for loght observation aircraft Taylorcraft,Piper and Aeronce supplied them with four ships each. The Taylorcrafts were called Yo-57 which meant that they were basically prototypes. The serial numbers were 4008 (42-452),4009(42-453),4010(42-454), and 4011(42-455). After that the Army bought twenty O-57's. They were also straightbacked ships. I syggested 42-455 as I know that that ship no longer exists. 4008 is in Texas and the other two are gone. OOPS I am wrong 4011 still exists. Change yours to 42-454. If you want to talk my number is 330-568-7084. I prefer before 10 PM Eastern. Dick

You keep forgetting we own the one that was thrown in the lake and it will fly once again with a replacement fuselage. Simply put, the YO-57 is a DF or DC-65 painted up in OD colors and had metal spars like the "D" models along with about 20 O-57's before they changed over to wood wings because aluminum was considered strategic material and called the L-2.

Mike,do you suppose I could jettison my door and trust it to break off in the right place,we already have one trial door showing it will remove the window and that is basically what I am after?

Actually all the YO-57's and the O-57's had metal spars. The actually made the switch to wood at about 4100. The "M" had the door release up at the wing root. The earlier ships had a retrofit door release just below the window. I don't recall having seen a 337 for flying without the door. 'Course it's not very ofton that you have an FAA person in the ship with you. Dick
