  • New Thread!!! Oshkosh

ok, so 2 years ago a bunch of us flew up to Oshkosh. Along the way there were several memorable and formative experiences (one of them put me in the "experienced" catagory and scare the living bejesus out of me!!). The other one was somewhat flabberghasting.

I think it was on our last leg that some pilot somewhere asked if there was some kind of procedure to get into OSH. I was floored. We as a group the night before sat down, each with a printed out notebook (I was bored) and discussed the whole arrival. He got his briefing from another pilot over the radio on the way. scary.

Arriving into OSH is a really serious and dangerous thing if you aren't prepared (hell, even if you are!). Wish I were going this year, definitely next year though!!!!.

I went in '05 as well. My last leg was from LaCrosse to OSH. All the way there I was listening to a couple guys on the radio trying to figure out the arrival.......I was thinking, "God, please let me be ahead of them." I was.

We did the same drill as you. Had the whole procedures "book" downloaded & went over it the night before. It was my second time flying in, unless they change something, I figure I've got it down for the next time.

It changes little from year to year but it is worth reviewing several times before you go. I flew in four days before the show started one year and we camped on the first line. That was the best. Met the most people too, getting there early.

The next morning, fog had formed over the whole field and we were strolling the still empty flight line when out of the mist, a fellow in white pants came forward and we talked for a nice while in a real relaxed manner. He sure was interested in us and what we hoped to experience (it was already my fifth trip or more). I bet you couldn't talk to him more than a minute a few days later. It was Tom Poberezny.

He is still not as engaging as his Dad, whom I have met several times there.

By all means, read the arrival and approach procedure and notams, and keep your head on a swivel. Yikes!

What a silly thing to say, Richard, everything is serious and dangerous if you aren't prepared. Any flying is. Even walking down the stairs at home, or driving the car is "a really serious and dangerous thing if you aren't prepared".

The Oshkosh 2007 NOTAM has been issued, and "if you are prepared", you read it, comply with it, be aware of idiots who have done none of the above, and then it is not serious or dangerous.

I know, because I have flown in to Oshkosh in a Taylorcraft too. 14,000 successful movements in just over a week tend to be fairly compelling evidence that "serious and dangerous" are not appropriate adjectives.

Where in YOUR pre-arrival brief for the "last leg" you mention did you use the arrival NOTAM?

It's not rocket science, even an ignorant Brit can do it.
