  • AZ in June

    Guys,

Bringing the family out to AZ for a few days beginning June 16th. Objective so far is Grand Canyon one day....looking for suggestions to fill in the itinerary. We are booked in Flagstaff one nite and Pheonix for two. Any suggestions on cliff dwellings? Have been to Tonto. Sweety and her AAA road book are driving me nuts....help!

Planes of Fame has a museum in Valle, not too far from the Canyon-

The ruins of Keet Seel are NE of Flagstaff near Monument Valley.

I wouldn't wish Phoenix on anyone.

      Vasey,

I dragged poor honey thru Planes of Fame last trip. Her revenge was 2X time at the Boyce Thompson arboretum east of Pheonix about 50 miles.

Boyce Thompson is pretty neat, & I'm not big on plants or flowers. Did you check out the "airport" at Superior (E81) while you were there? It's closed now, but I used to go in there for kicks when I was young & bulletproof.

Get off the freeway! Take the backroad that goes through Sedona. Stop at Oak Creek Canyon. Take bathing suit and take a dip. It's cool!

The Pima Air Museum in Tucson is my favorite place. I show up before they open and they have to kick me out at closing time. Also the Titan missle museum is a must. The Kit Peak observatory west of Tucson is very good also. Be prepaired though, it will be VERY hot in June if you're not used to it.

Flying into Sedona is neat -- the airport is on the top of a bluff. Other favorate spots are Marble Canyon and Lake Powell (Page AZ if driving, or Halls Crossing Utah if flying in) and renting a boat. While Lake Powell is an ecological disaster, it is a wonderful place to explore the back canyons by boat, and swim amoung the red rocks. I had a beaver (mammel, not airplane, pass under me while swimming there one day) Monument valley, Goose Necks, and the four corners area is another great destination.

Get the AAA Indian Country map for many more great places to visit.

Have a great time -- it is a wonderful part of the country.

(Tucson) Pima County Air Museum is surrounded by the US military aviation bone yard. An amazing thing to view. You can't get in but a tour around miles of perimeter fencing is a sight to behold. Desert Museum on Gates pass Tuscon is great. Kitt Peak near Aho is the largest collection of big telescopes on the planet and they have tours. Best Mexican Food on earth is anywhere you stop in the entire state.
Pennicle Peak steak house is a hoot. Although my favorite steak joint anywhere is Lil' Abner's up Silverbell road north of Tucson. I saw Lee Marvin driving out of there really drunk over 30 years ago -- Forrest Tucker was right behind him in another car and they were swearing bad enough to embarrass a sailor. It's not so wild now but it's still a hoot. GO on Sunday morning -- They may still have the donkey races. If they don't it's still worth hanging out there.

                  Re: AZ in June

if you are in N. Arizona and doing Sedona, consider going to Jerome; mining town, lots of interesting stuff, and a guy has a "ghost town" full of neat junk you can look at.

Flagstaff; if you are interested in architecure there is a well preserved Arts and Crafts style mansion near the University campus, Riorden (sp?) house. now a state park.

                  S. AZ. COnsider the Titan museum, Sonoran Desert Museum, Bisbee. and of course Tombstone.

Yep it will be hot, but not crowded. Keep a couple of gallons of drinking water in the car. Drink liquids all day, if you dont have to pee, you are not drinking enough...

                    Re: AZ in June

I was out that way this Christmas just gone.

Grand Canyon was, as ever, an overcrowded & overpriced hole-in-the-ground. I'd suggest you visit your local open-cast mine, you'd get just the same experience. The North Rim is better, and close to Antelope Canyon and Paria Canyon (including The Wave, for which you need to preferably book an entry permit well in advance, or get a day permit on the morning of your visit.)

Just east of Flagstaff is Meteor Crater...quite interesting. If interested in astronomy, try the Lowell Telescope in Flagstaff.

A couple of years ago while driving east on I-40 from Flagstaff, I thought about stopping in at the Meteor Crater for some of that Cherry Pie the domed cafe. (Does anyone remember Jeff Bridges in the movie Starman?) It looks to be just a place to buy tourist stuff though.

The drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff, going through Payson is a nice route also. Don't bother going to Winslow just to stand on a corner and wait for a girl in a flatbed Ford.

I know the flatbed Ford girl. She flies corporate out of Scottsdale now.

                          Honest.

                            Re: AZ in June

I lived in Tucson for a number of years and there are many great places to visit there, several of which have been already iterated......but I'll reiterate just a tad:
Pinnacle Peak has long been considered the best Steak House in the city and rightly so.
Pima Air Museum and the surrounding "bone yard" are an absolute must see for the enthusiast. You could easily spend a day there. There's a Taylorcraft hanging in one of the buildings.
Old Tucson is a great place to visit, combine it with a trip to the magnificent Sonora Desert Museum. Lee Marvin used to live out by there and, as previously mentioned, his hijinks and shenanigans were the stuff of legend in the area.
The Arizona Inn across from the Randolph Golf complex was built in the 30's and is a great place to stay.
Sabino Canyopn is an amazing drive or hike....stunning views.
Tombstone is nearby and it's the REAL old west. The Birdcage and Big Nose Kates are still there and much the same as they were in the days of Wyatt Earp.

                            Cheers, Vincent
