Re: aileron Brackets
Laz,
There are two types. One type, probably yours, is magnesium. These seem to often suffer from pitting and dissimilar metal corrosion. The others are welded steel, which I understand many consider to be superior because of these issues.
I may have some available in the future, but 1st I need to make sure I have everything I'll need for my own project. They do come up for sale from time to time. Just keep an eye out.

Re: aileron Brackets
Laz,
As Vincent explained, the magnesium are subject to pitting. Especially around where the small steel L-bracket bolts on towards the rear of the bracket, (dissimilar metal). This is where one of mine broke on my former BC-12 from corrosion. I believe the older side-by-side Taylorcrafts, and I know the L-2's, are steel.Cheers,

Re: aileron Brackets
I am referring to the ones that the Hinges attach to. the one with the bellcrank is fine. The problem as someone mentioned is where the small hole is that steel L brackets attach to. It caused a lot of corrosion.. There are two . a inner and outer on each wing. One of mine is probably useable but the others have a lot of pitting where the little L brackets attach to them. I'm not sure how much pitting is OK but two of them are beyond my limits. Once the wings are recoverd you really cannot inspect this area very well. If any one has 4 good ones Please send me a E-mail at [email protected]

Re: aileron Brackets
OK guys, if ever there was a part that needs to become an owner produced part, it is the welded steel aileron hinge brackets. The Mag ones are pure C**P in my opinion! I have welded ones on the 41 and want to make a set of welded tube ones for the 45. We should be able to build a fixture to weld them from a good one if anyone has a wing under restoration.
The Owner Manufactured Parts requirement is that the owner must be "substantively involved" in the manufacture by either designing it, making it, or doing the QA on it. In the past I have always made sure I was a part of all three. Anyone want to tack weld them together so the "owner" can do a drawing (we can "help" with the drawing), carry the tacked part to a good welder so he can be a participant in the welding, then we can give the owner the process for inspecting the welds and making sure the part is good. Should satisfy ANY FAA official.
Who has a hinge fitting to make the fixture and who can make a bunch of them? I'll help with a master drawing and the inspection requirements. A welder I'm NOT!

Re: aileron Brackets
Hank Thanks for your help. I do not have a welded bracket but do have access to a master certified welder. 30 + years of Tig welding. I could make up a jig. and send him the stuff. call me or E-mail me and I would be glad to help. Probably not in time for my T-craft but I think you are correct, the Mag ones are C**. We need to at least have the Jig and a few examples.

Re: aileron Brackets
Gentlemen I just pulled all three off my 41 BC. I think they are steel although I have not looked them over that well. They apear to be in good shape and I will not need them for a long time. I would entertain puting in ones made of tube, think light! Larry"I'm from the FAA and we're not happy, until your not happy."

Re: aileron Brackets
Larry, are yours made from pieces of tube or do they look like they are cast or machined from stock? The tube ones are the good ones and are welded up from lots of little pieces. The other ones are NOT actually machined but are cast from Magnesium. They corrode if you just look at them sideways. If you have the welded tube ones let's see if we can get you, Michael (Laz) and I can together. We will need to coordinate with the welder to make sure there is enough work left in the parts to qualify as “owner produced” when he builds them. We ought to at least see what it would cost to make them and get a feel for how many we can expect to make for the tribe.

Re: aileron Brackets
Laz,
Which of the brackets in the two pictures below is closest to the one you are talking about? The one on the left is the one that can be either Magnesium or Steel. It is where the tube comes from that actuates the aileron.
In the picture on the right you can see the bracket (painted white) on the right side of the picture attached to the aileron spar. It is the bracket the actual hinge pin goes through. To my knowledge they are ALL made of Steel and would be very easy to make at home.Richard Pearson
