  • I want good brakes

I was just in the shop cleaning the old cable actuated brakes. I am getting ready to take the skies off for the year and dread putting on those stupid brakes again. Has any body in the Anchorage area or any body in AK had hydraulic brakes put on their Taylorcraft and if so by who? I would like to get some tundra tires but what is the point if you can't stop. Any help would be great. Thanks Barney

If properly serviced and set up Shinn's will work just fine. The cost to install cleavelands would be rediculous.

I had the 150 pedals and hydro brakes (clvnd) on 33942, with paperwork and it was a great bird.

Still at lake hood I believe. The new owner, Jimmy, is a young A&P.
Give hinm a call, Im sure he would not mind if you were to look at it.

Thanks for the info, I talked to a fella at wolf lake this morning that has them on his bird and has put them on a few others too. I will swing by lake Hood next time I am in Anc. and have a look at that plane if it is there. Thanks for the help. Barney

              Re: I want good brakes

just saw 33942 with a for sale sign...must have outgrown the 65 hp already....did his learning.

anyway, the aircraft is currently parked in the transient parking by the gravel strip at lake hood.

Good Luck. I wish I had brakes on my current tcraft like those hydros on 942.

Can you expect the brakes to hold and get no creep at full static throttle, how about the C85's? Wonder how many tcrafts ended up on their nose from the stock brakes working to good. FK

My stock brakes hold my C85 at full power. . . . .I can also squat over 400 pounds.

I also have Cleveland toe brakes along with the exhaust from a Cessna 150. I am happy to have both. I park at Anderson Strip.

Hey, you guys with hydraulic brakes need to scan and post your 337s on this site. I am going to attempt to get the originals working correctly first. I have heard if maintained correctly they work OK. My left on is OK. I just need to get the right one up to speed.

                        Danny,
While your playing with your brakes make sure to check the cable size going from the pedel to the wheel. The original was 1/16" and they were commen to break so people started replacing them with bigger. It's not uncommen to see 1/8" cables being used and they DO not work very well. You'll never break on that big but you will also never be able to adjust the cable tension up enough to have good brakes, and it you do manage to get the tension adjusted up enough to work the brakes then you have to be like Eric(able to squat 400lbs.) just to be able to use them. I always use a 3/32" brake cable and it works really well. When everything is new they take a little tweeking to seat everything in but they work great once you get everything right.
