  • Calling all experts...part II!

Well tribe...I dug into the airframe and engine logs to see what I could scrounge up. Here is what I found:

    Tail Number: N36466
Serial # 4964668 Anyone of you know this plane?

    Airframe:

    3789 hrs Engine: TTE 1921hrs, 801 SMOH

1985 restoration that included: complete strip, sandblasted, primed, all new AN hardware, cables, New wing tip bows, new aileron, elevator and rudder hinge pins and bushings, new windshield, new Airspeed Indicator, Tach, new stab. wires, new Polyfiber Stits throughout.

small cracks in FWD and AFT landing gear attach points welded in 1964 and again in 2001

Bungees were replaced in 2001 (Time for new ones?)

Rear Spar Scarf Splice between 11th and 12th rib done in 1946, 337 filed.

1973 Damaged left wing by a club member and sold to EAA chapter for restoration.

    Front struts replaced in 2004.

No 337 for rear LH strut splice!

2005 forward tail spring attach repaird after broken. No 337, repair look good, except that the covering was replaced in a manner that allow for easy inspection of the low point in the tail. (Good, Bad?) Owner says that it is easier to inspect for corrosion.

    Engine:

Overhauled engine in 1966 with new parts. Again in 1985 with new pistons, refinished valves and seats, Crank run out .001 New mag points, condensors, bearings and ignition harness, new plugs.

It is unclear as to whether this engine crank was already turned .010 (the limit). If so, doesn't this mean that I will not be able to get another overhaul out of it?

Cessna fuel strainer installed with 337 documentation.

I am checking on Carb. I believe it may have the original Stromberg. I will check the "wired shut" item that was mentioned previously.

Mags were originally Eisman according to Engine Service Manual, however, the current mags has shielded cables so I know they have been replaced. Not sure if they are Bendix or Slick. Will pull the cowl off today.

    Any other thoughts tribe?

$16000 includes 10hrs. of dual. Skis and extra 500.

    Thanks again,

    Eric

Overhauled with new components, crank turned .010

Mr. Barber, I'd like to get your thoughts! I noticed your Bassett in your avatar. We have been rescuing Bassett for some time now. We currently have Jack and Cheyenne 8 and 3. Does that help get your thoughts?

    Anyone else?

    Eric

      Noof
It sounds like a good plane at a fair price from all you have described.
The weak mag coil needs attention soon.
There is no big concern with a .010 ground crank. An already-been-turned crank can still be used at the next major in most cases, but you will have several more birthdays before you need to do a major overhaul if you keep the oil changed.

        Re: Calling all experts...part II!

Sounds like a winner to me.

The only outstanding items to me are a final, 100% verification that the groundloops or accidents that caused the spar damage and the strut replacement and the landing gear attach damage.... did not also cause damage to the spar roots and the upper fuselage attach fittings and the upper cabin tube structure.

If your IA can give you a good positive opinion on that issue, buy it and start enjoying it.

Yeah, "ten under" is the limit on a crankshaft but I do sincerely suspect that there are more than one "fifteen under" crankshafts that are flying happily ever after with the right bearings and wooden propellers.

Yes Eric, it is Harrison, MI...the big green hangar and Don will be there on most any nice day. One of the nicer T-crates around the state!!! Don't have his phone number handy right now.

            Re: Calling all experts...part II!

Here is a bit more. The owner and I spoke again today. He (an IA) and I (A&P) student are going to do the annual together.

I voiced my concern about really getting a good look at the Spar Roots. Is removing the root fairing and looking with a flexible light and mirror enough? Or, do I need to insist the left wing come off for the inspection? The splice was done back in 1946. I imagine when the EAA group recovered it in 85, they took a good look at the repair. Kind of like opening a time capsule...cool.

N466 still has the Stromberg carb. And it is wired full rich, should I be concerned with this? I want to be able to fly at altitude (5k) or so ocassionally so it would be nice to be able to lean the mixture.

Bendix Mags, no impulse couplings. Anyone have an impulse coupling for sale?

How about flying a bit over gross? What kind of testing did they receive back in 1941? I am 200lbs and my wife is 130. Useful load is only 372, which leaves me with room for seven gallons.

Final question.... what about burning MOGas? Who is doing it, who is not? Why? I know this is a hot topic between some.

Can I safely run Auto gas? If so, what octane rating? The STC says less than 1% alcohol and 87 octane or higher. THoughts please!

We are going flying as soon as we get a break in the weather.

            Thank you again.

P.s. I will search the forum for auto gas posts. I forgot that I can do that on this forum.LLLLLLOOOOOVE this forum.

            Cheers,
            Eric "Noof" Nuffer

                Re: Calling all experts...part II!

the plane sounds pretty decent for the money. REgarding the missing 337's you feel it should have your IA should be able to generate those after the fact. This is quite common. The strut repair would definitely require a 337. The tailgear repair maybe or maybe not. When you say there isn't one is this based on the records with the aircraft or did you get a copy of the FAA's file? (a good deal for $5)

I am not so sure wing removal is required unless it would alleviate some concerns you have. That is a pretty major thing to take a look at something.

                  Re: Calling all experts...part II!

Have you ordered the CD from the FAA that gives the history of the plane? It will have all the 337's from the life of the plane. "No 337" may only mean you are missing the paper copy when in fact there is one in the records that would be on the FAA CD. You probably got that.

Noof you have my attention, Kelli-Belle too!
I hope when you buy the Taylorcraft , or any Taylorcraft you see fit to join the Foundation still only $15.00 per year. If you look about you will find extensive inforamtion on the discussion forumn about proper inspection of a Taylorcraft, Hire some one to do this! Who will be maintaining the ship for YOU ? have that person look her over. Yes the price sounds good, the ser# does not make any sense, I can look up the N number tomorrow when I get abck from an inspection of Doc Nelson's rebuild project. e-mail me direct, I do a lot at night on the high speed here at home, but can only look up and respond from my desk at the airport. repeat the N number to me and the date of manufacture off the data plate.
