  • Wing Spars

    Hey guys,

Using the forum for the first time. I'm restoring my 46 and have some ?'s. I'm sure they have been asked before. I need a data plate for it ( New repo ). Also need to replace the wing spars ( rat nests in the wings for thirty years) were can I get them Pre cut and drilled? Or do I have to make them myself?

    Thanks

      Eric,
There's a blank data plate on ebay right now: click here

Aircraft Spruce is well regarded when it comes to.......aircraft spruce. They are the standard source for spars.

      regards,
      Vincent

Thanks for the info guys. I'm watching the data plate and will order the Univair catalog. I need to buy a new windshield. What is the best tint to get? The green, grey, or clear.

        Thanks
        Eric

Our data plates are $10.00 ( original) I do have to fill them out here.
That is another $40.00..... Join the Foundation my friend and find out we have two sources for spars... Univiar is the best right now.

I know that Buzz Wagoner quoted me on spars, they were spendy, they will predrill them though. Good luck Tim

Norm I think we should be boot legging data tags for t-crafts and j-3's. Looks like they're worth a small farm in Georga.

Someone asked to make a copy of my data plate, said he would give me $50 dollars to use it for one hour, and it went to Guam???? I think that is where the $130 plate came from, he is an airline pilot and goes lots of places and buys lots of stuff and it all ends up on ebay, O.T.

OK I tried to get a quote from Aircraft Spruce, they said they do not have wood in the right size for my 41 BC. So will go to Univair next. However how do you get all the nails out of the ribs with out deforming the ribs terribly? Or do you just get them off and straighten the ribs when done. I have everything else off but the ribs. Let them go till last.

                            Hi Larry:

I worked a putty knife under the rib flange just enough to move the old nail head up 1/16 inch or so. Then I grabbed the nail with a small dykes (wire cutter) and rocking the tool handles down (cutter end up) will pull the little SOB right out without damaging the rib. The rib flange will have a bit of a wave to it, but don't worry, when you nail it onto the new spar it'll lay right down happy as a pig in shit.

Bob - did you make any effort to close the old nail holes in your ribs prior to renailing them in place? - Mike
