    Gents,

I am in the process of rebuilding my ailerons (1940 BL) Does anyone know of or have a source for the ringnails used by the factory? or is there a suitable replacement I should use?

    Thanks in advance,

    Re: ring nails

Are you referring to aircraft nails? If so, Aircraft Spruce carries them in all of the AN sizes. Doc

      Re: ring nails

they are different, they have little rings around the shank that keeps them from pulling out.
They are mini versions of the nails American Champion uses in their wings if you have seen those

I heard they are used for floors and maybe furniture, thought someone here may have used them.

        Re: ring nails

They have little nails like that at marine supply places. Boatbuilders use them. If you get it right the first time, they work great. But if you goof and have to take something apart, those little barbs will tear the sh** outa the wood and make you very unhappy.

The original style AN aircraft nails work great and are plenty strong enough.

Yea those little ring nails look like it's a one way trip, I will take your advice and use the A/C nails.

          Thanks,

            Re: ring nails

Be careful with the "ring" nails that was a "FIX" for the nails pulling on the Aeronca stuff. the #14 ring nail will split the wood and cause real havoc in the future. Use AC nails. #18 & 19 are used a lot. the Taylorcraft used "cement" coated nails to produce the staying ability. I just put the drawings onto CD-R PDF stuff and that will be a topic for the next "Taylorcrafter" newsletter.

                Re: ring nails

Where can you buy 19 ga cement coated nails? Aircraft Spruce nails are 20 ga, much smaller that what the factory used.

                  Re: ring nails

Dip them in Epoxy or Varnish when installing them if the ones you buy are not pre-cemented!

Try Wicks aircraft. Good luck Tiim

                    Re: ring nails

I'm using #14 GA ring shank nails for my Taylorcraft 20 wing because most of the holes are being used for the 2nd time, but keep in mind the 20 spars are massive, no chance of splitting. I bought the nails from Univair, they're expensive @ 18c each, but thats what i consider the best for this purpose. I've done tests by nailing 20GA aluminum to some spruce, then trying to get the nail to pull out, the aluminum tore, but the nail stayed tight, so we have to make sure that it's in the right place, no second chances with these nails.
I'm comfortable with that, because after disamantling a wing with standard AC nails many of them weren't holding very well anyway. I want my nails to hold and not have to worry about it.

                      Re: ring nails

Univair now has 18ga aircraft nails. They are not in the catalog, you will have to ask for them. They work well. I just bought a pound,so if you can't get them, I can spare a few. Larry Huntley

Don't have a part #. All I know is they ordered a special run of these nails for someone who needed them for a Waco. Clyde Smith told me ,I called Univair, after much checking and waiting, they found them. Larry Huntley

#18 my box shows 1.98 for about 500 ( hardware store)
#14 ringed about same age lot cheaper back then.
I use varnish or glue upon insertion I agree on the Model 20 , I think there is a #16 ringed that works good too!!
