Tribe, Has anyone replaces the leading edge in the field? If so, how is it done?

    Re: Leading edge replace

Tom, I made and replaced all of the leading edge fairings on my wings. It's very simple. I made a "press brake" with a couple of straight 2X4s and a piece of tubing. To install, just put the fairings in place on the wing, using ratchet tie downs on top of each rib. Don't pull too tight, just enough to get the fairing to sit tight against the ribs. Using a small angle drill reach inside the fairing from the bottom and drill through the existing rib holes through the new fairings. I think I used a #41 drill...one that will give the #4 "A" sheet metal screws a tight fit. If some of the screws strip out use a #4 "B" screw and a tinnerman nut. I think I have pictures if you need them.

      Re: Leading edge replace

I need to replace at least some of the leading edge on 9696. If I make my own, what material is called out and what thickness? Looked at the prints for an L2, are they the same or heavier? Univair wants $38 dollars a piece for theirs. Not terrible but if I can do it myself I would prefer that.

The L-2 has wood leading edge that is a full box (spar to spar with filler blocks between ribs). Dick

My 41 had .012 3003 half hard, so i substituted .020 2024 t3 and had a sheet metal shop cut them 12" wide and put about a 1/4" bend along each upper and lower edge. I then used #4 pk screw to hold them on and lots of rachet straps to pull them tight on the ribs. Good luck Tim
