  • Taylorcraft Empty Weight?

I am looking for information on how much the empty weight of Taylorcrafts vary. I saw in another post of some down to 700 pounds. But I have heard of some that weigh 850 empty. That is a huge difference in being able to carry a passenger. How much does yours weigh empty?

    My '38 weighs 675#. It was 650# from the factory. My '46 with a C-85 weighed 768#. My '40 weighed 667# I think.

My Deluxe with the O-200 on it was 925 empty. Fat ole bird. The wood doors was probably 50 lbs of it. The lightest one we have had was a bone stock '46 that was around 750 lbs.

Did the 925 pound bird still have a 1200 pound maximum weight?

          Re: Taylorcraft Empty Weight?

There was a previous thread on this very subject...it was a pretty extensive poll of most everyone on the FORUM. I looked for it, but couldn't find it.

Anyway, mine weighs in at 759 lbs. It is a VERY basic BC12D, no headliner, no wheelpants, etc....

If I recall correctly, most came in nearer that 850 mark.

Eric, were they calculated weights or had the a/c been actually put on scales?

The '38 & '46 were actual weight. The '40 was my first Tcraft & I never weighed it. Prewars are about 75-100#s lighter than postwars.

N29544 1940 BL(C)-65 is 776 pounds weighed not calculated. Heavy metal prop, .090" aluminum plate instrument panel, carpet and upholstery, full forward cabin skylight, no headliner, Stits covering, closed cowl. Gross weight 1280 (Harer STC) but still has A-65 installed for now.

Made entire new cooling system out of thick aluminum and silicone rubber seals, probably added 5-6 pounds but will cool better.

I think it is fairly well agreed that the pre-war airplanes were lighter, partially because they had minimal dope coatings and the factory weights were a little optimistic. The prospect of finding a pre-war T-craft that actually weighs 640 pounds, however, is fairly slim in my book.

What is needed for the Harer STC to go to 1280 pounds. An empty weight of 850 and gross of 1200 doesn't leave much for two people to fly in the plane, even if the wing tanks are left empty. That extra 80 pounds makes a second person much, much easier.

Yeah- my 46 BC12-D-85 with full interior, large baggage, wing tanks and 8.00x6 tires is850 but the gross weight was upped to 1280 by the STC. I do not have any electrical or vaccum systems. I am installing a Scott pneumatic tailwheel this weekend so plan on adding 3 pounds to that.
