        Re: gascolator

If what you are trying to do is remove just the drain valve from the bottom portion of the gasculator you are probably dealing with some dissimilar metal corrosion. Heating is probably not a good first option. I would remove the piece and position it in a vice in such a way that you can get a good dose of penetrant on it and it may take repeated applications over a few days to free it up. My take on these situations is that if you can't get it disassmembled it is junk anyway so any measures required are appropriate. The adage "If it jams, force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!" may apply here.

There are a myriad of penetrants out there and everyone's favorite is better than all the rest so I won't make any suggestions along that line.

Be aware that the gasculator metal is somewhat fragile so don't squeeze it too hard in the vise. (unless you have to:-)

Before you get really violent with the item, is there a way you can get enough access to change the seal in it? If not, get the big hammer out and go to it!

Removing it is going to be like metal bumping. The more LIGHT taps the better. If you try to just turn it you will probably wring it off. We took HUGE landing gear gland nuts off Navy planes by using an ultrasonic probe against the nut and gentle pressure. Really shook up the monster mechanic when I did it with one hand after he had bent a 4' wrench trying to force it.
Commercial penetrating oils age good but if you can get some "Oil of Wintergreen" it works well too and smells real nice.
Since you probably DON'T have an ultrasonic probe what I have used at home is a rivet gun set as fast and soft as possible to tap on the wrench handle. Remember you aren't trying to POUND it off, you are just repeatedly tapping it. The higher the frequency and lower the force the better. If it doesn't move, put some more oil on it and let it rest for a while to soak in. If it doesn't move after several tries tap it a couple of times in the tightening direction than the loosening direction again.
I pretty much NEVER tear jammed threads out any more. DON'T try to force it, it just takes patience.

I had the same problem with one several years ago and used an inpact wrench-the pounding action took it out without any problem-just be sure not to use too much air pressure.

              Re: gascolator

1,000,000 light taps is MUCH better than 3 or 4 hard WHACKS or 1 hard twist. If you are hitting it soft enough you think it isn't working you are doing it right. On bolts I usually hit it on top of the head (pushing the bolt into the hole) while applying gentle twisting pressure. If you hit a brass part hard enough to leave a mark you are hitting it TOO HARD.

Thank you all for you ideas. I got today with a little mouse milk. And a

vise and pair of work gloves. Got my new gaskets at the tractor place.

The little is back in the air like g-d intended.
                thanks.
