There's an old adage in aviation....never fly the model A of anything.

Certainly applicable to software...not sure whether it applies to Taylorcrafts

      Re: windows Vista

When I installed XP over Win98, HALF of my application programs (Adobe Distiller, Adaptec Create CD, etc) ceased functioning. I am not a huge fan of Microsoft right now. Wouldn't spend money on the new OS on a bet. Maybe my monitor won't work, or maybe the refrigerator or the doorbell...

        Re: windows Vista

I keep Win98SE on my home computer...no viruses or any other cr@p. Excellent.

My work computer (the one I write from now) has XP...not impressed, so why should I get Vista?

At the end of the day, Microsoft, like manufacturers of all products, "Have" to keep updating tham to keep up with the competition. Have you noticed how many "new" dishwashing tablets are created these days?

98SE???? Holy cow Rob, you do like old stuff!!

I got Vista but put it on a second hard drive to test drive it. I won't use it for my normal stuff because too many of my older apps (for work) would cease to function.

Quite frankly, I think MS is making a huge mistake. 4 versions of the OS is confusing as hell (and I'm in the industry!!!). Quite frankly, I'm starting to think Macs. My wife has two and they just work. All the time. And there is only one OS to pick from!

              Re: windows Vista

word on the street is that Vista is a massive resource hog. 1gb of system RAM is considered minimum to run Vista with any level of efficiency.

nope.... I'm not going to upgrade for at least another 18 months.

My favorite OS is NT 4.0. I still work on an NT box everyday and it's been running strong editing video and compositing video and animation for the last 6 years. It was only turned off twice in the last 6 years. Once was to move it into a new office and the other was a power failure at the office.... well ok I have had to reboot it a few times.

too bad 98% of all new softwarwe won't work on it anymore.

                Re: windows Vista

                Hey Norm,

I just bought a copy of the business edition to do some software certification at work. Of course I am in line with all the other lemmings so probably wont get it for a week or two. I will be overlaying it onto an existing XP system so it should be interesting to see how well it does at preserving the various optional software packages and user data.

I would not worry too much about starting out on XP, its relativly stable and a known platform for running the software you want. I would suggest you let Vista get broken in and leak all over somebody elses floor for the next 6 months and then make a decision if you want to upgrade to it; you also might check with Dell as many of the PC makers were offering incentives and discount coupons on a later upgrade to Vista inorder to sell the systems they had on hand that had XP. The next 6 months with Vista is not for the timid as proven by previous releases of Windoze.

Memory wlll be a big issue. Most XP systems have 256MB; really need 512MB, and if you do a lot of different things at the same time then 1GB really is desirable unless you like to wait (maybe ok for a goverment job!). If you are in the 256MB camp I would work on that first.

                Hugs,

                bob.

I have a unique situation... my boss is a Mac addict from way back. He issued me a 17 inch G4 Mac laptop for work stuff. So I get to use the Mac and my old XP computer both.

The Mac is easier and stuff seems to work better. It doesn't crash. Even though I am a novice at Mac stuff and have to call my boss often to ask questions, I find myself using it as often or more for my personal stuff.

If I had to advise somebpody who does not know how to use a computer which way to go, I'd have to tell him to buy a Mac. I never thought I'd say that.

I agree on Apple. In fact here at work, I have a Tower system on my desk, and a mac mini over on the test bed.

If I were starting over, I would start with Apple.
