replaced the brake lining on the right wheel today. Bought the lining kit complete with rivets from the Luscombe guy here in Chandler.

The rivets he sends are not quite the same as the standard 4-4 or 4-6 brake rivets I've seen. They are in between in length (4-5?) and the heads are thicker. They work but I'm curious what others are using for brake rivets?

I'll be doing the left side this weekend. Really easy job if you have the proper tools . A Rapco brake rivet squeezer, 5/16" brad point bit (for counterboring), 9/64 bit (for drilling out old rivets), and an extra dose of patience was all it took.

We readjusted the shoes and I gotta say..... those who think you need hydraulic brakes maybe should have a closer look at the condition of their Shinn's. These new linings will lock up a stock 6x6 with ease. I like it.

Amen to Shinn's properly adjusted. Dog collar rivets work too!! Hardware stores still may have them.

Ok, you guys have me convinced not to wait until this Summer when I'm on floats to do the brakes. I have a 17 year old that will start to work on his tailwheel endorsement as soon as it gets above 35 degrees again here in Minnesota. So how about sources for shinn brake linings? right now I can only hold the airplane at about 1400rpm and I do not want to adjust them anymore since the linings are down to the rivet heads.

Classic Aero in Gilbert, AZ has them for $55 for two linings and rivets.

Ask for the 1" wide linings part number CAS11-001

480-650-0883 is the number. Also you will want a Rapco brake lining rivet tool available at any aviation parts retailer. The relining job should take less than 1 hour a side... maybe 2 if you stop for a pizza/soda break.
