  • IO-240 engine swap for a O-200 ??

I was reading somewhere that the IO-240 (125hp) is almost a bolt in
replacement for a O-200/C90. Does any know if this is the case, and or has
anyone done the same? This would definately save a lot of work if it were
    correct for sure.

AFAIK, it'll bolt right up to the (O-200) mount, but the whole induction system is up on top. Might be some clearance issues with the top cowl.

Firstly, thanks for the reply !

AFAIK , what does this mean, sorry but I've been out of the loop too long I think ?

So, other aircraft are swapping out the O-200 for a IO-240 with little work?
The induction system on the top I noticed, but it looks very tight and can
be worked around if most of the other dimensions are the same such as the
prop flange. Another thing that looked good about the IO-240 is that the
exhaust, being under the engine would definately fit inside the cowl of my
Tcraft. Right now it is two into one pipes straight out and loud. From the ground it is quiet but inside is a different story .

I must call the factory, they must have considered this.

There is an article in the latest SportAviation that talks about a new (or reworked) O-200 that is based on some of the IO-240 improvements. It is being developed specifically for the LSA market. It is going to be called the Alpha 200.

No way you can get an IO-240 under the cowl. However you might be able to get an O-240 under there. Are we talking a legal install or experimental?

Also- there have been many issues with vapor lock and the IO-240. . . . I think it would be more trouble than benefit.

Thanks,I'll check that out. Actually I was reading a newslettter from Pulsar
last night where they are in the process of building up a 130hp 0-200 . I will contact them today to see how it went and how reliable this engine is .

Vapor lock is scary. Seems to be a common problem with the experimental
engines as well. I think I will consider having my engine reworked to make 125 hp with some of the common mods .

O.K. which is it ? Can or can't I get that IO-240 uder the cowl ??
Just kidding, you just seemed to be a little unsure in your comments.

I am experimental so whatever goes in there is legal for me. I was thinking
O-290 D2 but that is a whole lot of work with motor mount, cowling and the
extra weight to offset. Now I'm thinking I may just have the C90 reworked to make 125Hp with some of the common mods. It seems to be working for others and the thing is, their is little extra work involved.............Bonus!!

                      Robert,

You should check out Don's Dream Machines. You can find them on the web at http://www.donsdreammachines.com

They have STC's for converting an 85 into an O-200. They also do high performance work for experimentals.

No I am not confused. IO-240 is fuel injected and has a modified up induction off an IO-360 Continental and stands about 3-4" taller than a stock O-200 due to the throttle body and induction pipes. The O-240 has a completely different induction system and I have a buddy installing one of those on a PA-11 now. I would consider one of the new 120hp Franklins if you can find one. Direct replacement for Cessna 150 engines under the stock cowl.

Excellent , I didn't know that the Franklin was a bolt in replacement and reasonably priced too. Now if they would only answer the phone so I could ask some more questions about their 125 hp engine .

As far as I know they are not back in production yet with the engines. they do show up on barnstormers every couple months or so reasonably priced. If you need one worked on I would only send it to Greg Lucas in Pauls Valley OK. He is the best there is now on Franklins and has all the connection for parts.
