    Oil leak by breather question A-65

    The last few times I've flown I have had oil leaking and flowing across the data plate on the engine (at first I thought it was a leak from one of the rivets) but today it seemed to be coming from the rubber hose that connects to what I believe is the breather fitting on the right (co pilots) side of the engine. What a mess this is making. I have oil on the bottom of the top cowl and its hitting the firewall. Its not a massive amount of oil but it sure goes a long way!

    I think I have to replace the rubber hose that goes from the breather fitting to the tube. I'm actually surprised that there is this much oil coming from there. Has anyone had any experience with this.

    Does anyone know the size of the rubber hose that connects from the fitting to the tube???

    Make sure your breather tube has a vent hole and that the tube is not freezing up and pressurizing the crankcase. Get a 0-200 breather (or modify yours) for the crankcase and that will help keep oil off the belly also.

      My guess is that the lower end of your breather tube is freezing thus blocking the breather, there should be a whistle in the breather tube up about 4" from the bottom, sometime guys would drill the hole in the rubber hose which may be the case on yours and thus its venting the crankcase at that hole blowing the oil out and over the engine and cowl.

      By the way the breather does help I installed it on my Continental O-200 and while it didn't completly stop all the oil drips after shut down it stopped 80 / 90% of it now have little if any oil on the belly or landing gear.

        There's also a bunch of useful stuff on Harry Fenton's website and at this Cessna 150 owners site

        You might also have the breather go over the top of the engine, which is better than down the front.
