  • Unfortunate end of a tcart.... gives us a new parts source!!

The pacific northweast has been anything but friendly the last week, and unfortunately, my friend and customers tcart was the only victim at Victoria International airport on Vancouver Island. Winds between 80-90 knots unfastened the tiedowns, and cartwheeled the plane 200+ feet onto a taxi way. The damage precludes any feasable economic rebuild presently, so parts are available, to help the owner recoup some of his loss.... the following list is most of the usefull items, email for more info, or any items you don't see...

    General description of usefull items:
65hp engine core (no moving strike, but high time, on condition)
    ENGINE MOUNT, good shape.
Exhaust shroud, relatively new, slightly bent, straightenable.
    Baffles really good
New slick magnetos, 125 hours since new last year, harness and plugs
Top cowl, with bumps for spark plugs
nose bowl slightly bent, but straightenable
    Right main gear
    bungee covers...
    wheels and brakes
    doors
Inst. and all cabin items good, not old style yokes
fuselage: firewall to approx. 6 feet back is perfect, then badly kinked, but very aft end of tail is also ok.
Right stab perfect, right elevator very minor bend, easily repairable
left elevator trim mechanism and trim tab good, bent outboard
    tail brace wires all good
    right aileron good
right wing broken spars, but looks good other that that
    left wing- parts only
    one strut useable: right forward
    jury struts good
    tailwheel springs
    old maule style tailwheel

The owner is hoping that at least his tragic loss will keep some of these beautiful planes flying on... You can contact him at:

Looks like there are a BUNCH of us who need top cowls. If you are like me it is the wrapped hinge that is the problem. The cowl itself is pretty simple, we just need to take anyone who wants to put plug blisters on a smooth cowl back behind the barn. If you have a cowl without spark plug blisters and want them, FOR CRIPES SAKE ASK AND ONE OF US WILL TRADE YOU!!! It's pretty hard to REMOVE the hole once you modify one.
Does ANYONE know where we can find a "rolling break" to make the hinges? If so, I have a couple of sets taht won't work very well but can make drawings or provide them as samples to a manufacturer.
Yes, I was SECOND to ask about the top cowl (but I DID do my best to convince him to try to fix her up and not part her out).

I'd like the nose bowl. I tried to email but got the mailer daemon. Is the seller reading these postings?

                Ed,

I sent an e-mail to Murray and he got it and responded to me. I'm not sure if he checks this website, though....???
                Cheers,

Re: Unfortunate end of a tcart.... gives us a new parts source!!

I'm rebuilding a 1941 BC12D and it's comming together pretty well up to this point. When I got this plane everything that could fit in a box was in a box. I'm now at the point of sorting out instrumentation. Guess what, it's mostly junk. The things that are OK are the mag switch, wet compass and maybe the altimeter. The panel isn't in very good shape but can be salvaged. What I would like to find is a complet set of instruments consistent with the 1941 time frame. I'm not hard over on everything being 1941 but it would be nice.

My question is, what do you have that I could use and what would you need to get for it.

If anyone has a source for a good panel and gauges I'm intrested.

                  My email is [email protected].

                  Thanks, Norm G

Re: Unfortunate end of a tcart.... gives us a new parts source!!

                    Norm,
I have been doing the same thing with my 41 and the two hardest parts for me to find have been the 6:00 altimenter and the big compass housing (haven't gotten the compass fixed yet, I expect that to be a big expense). I plan to use Keystone instrument to rebuild my stuff. Maybe we could get a group repair rate with the Taylorcraft logos on teh instruments.
Do you still have the original enstrument suspension pieces and the correct panel?

Re: Unfortunate end of a tcart.... gives us a new parts source!!

Hank, I would like to have Taylorcraft instruments in my 41, and if we can find a source that would be great. Your question on having the correct panel is yes I do have a original, servicable panel, not very good but servicable. As for instrument suspension pieces, I don't have them. In fact I don't know what they look like. So now I need to add suspension hardware to the list of panel parts that I'm going need.
                      Thanks, Norm G

My 41 panel is completly apart right now and everything is easy to see. My suspension parts are NOT original and I hung the instruments so the front was preserved and looked right. I will try and take some pictures of what I built. They stopped doing it that way for a reason. It's a PITA to mount the instruments.
Drop me a personal message with your email and we can swap pictures. I never have been able to post pictures. (I can send Orbiters to the ISS but I can't post a stupid picture. Go figure?!?!)

I sent an email that was not returned this time asking about the nose bowl and exhaust muff--no answer though.
