Does any one know what type and size the thread is on the tailbrace wires? Also is there a source for original nipples. They apear to be from a Motorcycle

    Re: Tailbrace wires

I'm pretty sure they are 8-36 cut threads and they are NOT motorcycle parts! If you buy a set make sure you get the jam nuts too. The goofy thread nuts are hard to find. You might also want to check that you have the special washers that go over the tubes on the surfaces where the wires attach. They are kind of hard to find too. There is a drawing out there of all the parts with the part numbers but mine is all boxed up and I haven't a clue which box.

      Re: Tailbrace wires

Thanks for your reply Hank. I do not intend to use Motorcycle parts. I purchased a set of new wires from Univair. They are the 8-36 threads. I would sure love to have a drawing of all the proper parts. I have all my original wires and Nipples. In 1970 when I restored N95817 for the first time I purchased two new wires fromTaylorcraft in Ohio. I just found the original wires in my parents home in Ohio. They still had the original jam nuts on them. My guess is that the original Taylorcraft nipples were wire spoke nipples. The ONLY reason to have the slot on the top as they do, would be for quick assembly of a wheel. I suspect that whover produced them for Taylorcaft also built wheels spokes. The goofy 8-36 thread is exactly what many early wheel makers had on their spokes. If a supply of them could be found they coluld be tested and posssibly FAA PMA approved for members of this group. Mine are in OK shape but are slightly pitted.

Maybe someone else has a copy of the drawing.

          Re: Tailbrace wires

Thanks ever so much Ron. I notice that the Drawings show the Threads were Witworth at some point. My thought is that a prototype was probably from A English Mototcycle Wheel. They used Witworth in the 30's When they built the actual AC using these drawings the closest they could come to the Witworth size was 8-36.

Do you happen to have the drawings of the straps and washers used. I have some illustration in a old print but hard to see.

          Thanks again for your time.

                  Re: Tailbrace wires

Bless u Dick I now have an extra 15 mins to play with today. the 940-416 is about out of supply ; Rumor has it a SAE washer has the same dimensions

the 940-416 ID is same as 960-416 . The OD of 940-416 is same as 960-616 so the straps cannot slip off the posts.
