Re: bungee tool for rent?
check's in the mail Dave. Is this tool pretty self explanatory? Just remove the seat sling and it should all make sense right? I know I'll have to use a come-along to hold the gear legs together. Where shall I attach to the gear if I have wheel pants?DJ Vegh

Yes remove seat sling. Take a look at the picture on ebay item # 300043361896 and you will see tool in place. That will help explain a lot.
A couple things to ponder while its on the way to you. A come along will work great. Attach it below the brake belcrank so it can't slide up the gear vee and damage the fabric. Don't damage the belcrank or its axle either. Don't over pull with the come along you can cause damage. Just keep it from spreading.
The tool will reach to the floor so if the gear has spread you probably will still be able to get the cords on the tool and install them.
You can remove just one cord at a time and replace just one at a time that will help keep your gear in place. I cut one cord a very slowly with a sheet rock knife, makes a scarey thump at the last strand.
So having said all that it may also work fine if you do nothing at all. But I usually tie a rope between the gear so it makes a loop, pull it tight and tie it off then put a stick in the loop and wind it up like a rubber band airplane motor to it pulls tight between the gear and holds gear together.
You may have to take off the bungee covers too. I don't usually but it will make it easier for you to see what's in there.
There is a rubber bumper between the landing gear and the fuselage right where the bungee is. You will want to inpsect that. Folks replace it with a rubber axe handle protector. Apparently if your cut the protector in half it is teh same shape as the bumper. I think you get it at Ace hardware.
Also there is a 3/16" steel snare cable at each bungee to catch the gear should the bungees fail. Check that too for rust and fraying. As I recall that cable normally goes on first then the bungees so it's under the bungees. Forrest may have a drawing.
I landed on the snare cable once (in 1968). Bungees popped on landing in a'39 BL65 (fuel had spilled on or near them earlier in the year and weakened them). That particular airplane had the snare cables safety wired into place differently than I just described. Ever since then I safety them that same way on my t-craft. It worked, can't argue with that! But I may be the only one that does it that way.
Bungee cords have tremendous tension. I think 450 lbs when stretched. When you stretch them keep your head and other important parts out of the line of fire should anything slip and get sling-shotted. After the cords are stretched I keep my finger out of harms way and push the cords into position with a screw driver (carefull of sharp edges). tire spoon, wood dowel... I am a chicken!
So that's what I remember about bungees right now! Hope it helps, Dave.

Re: bungee tool for rent?
DJ- how loose are your cords now?
Also, I forgot, untie the airplane wings before you do anything. If the gear drops suddenly and the other wing is tied loosely it may damage it when teh rope catches.
Sometimes you can use a freind or a car parked under the wing with lots of foam/pads/pillows on its roof to rest some of the wing weight on. A strong freind pushing on the struts where they bolt to the wing will work too if you change one cord at a time and they are in reasonbe shape.
Be carefull, take no chances.

Re: bungee tool for rent?
I prefer a "come-a-long" and some rope to pull the gear togeather.
A freind back in Wa. purchased the 9010 HD bungies for his supposedly 46' BC12D and after I put them on the gear still felt loose and hung low. I measured the fuse and found the bungie hooks on his fuse closer to the gear bump stop than mine. After looking in the parts manual they list the 9/16 x 9 for the "B" series Tcrafts and the 9/16 x 10 for the "BC" series. Just because your paperwork says its a "BC" doesn't mean it realy is. I don't remember what the difference was. I can measure my F19 and find out what it is. I think it is the same as a BC12D.Jason

Re: bungee tool for rent?
The pre-war and some early BC12D use the 9090 cords (9/16 x 9 in cord) All others use 9010, 9010HD or 9010HDX or others.
these are 9/16 x 10 in)
Soooo know which fuselage you have and order cords accordingly.Taylorcraft Foundation, Inc

Re: bungee tool for rent?
swapped the bungees today. it was INCREDIBLY EASY with Dave's tool! The tool is extremely well designed for the task. Took us longer to remove the bungee covers and seat than it did to actually put on the bungees.
The old bungees were in fact 9010HD's despite it being a Jan/1946 BC12D so I was glad that I ordered the correct ones. The plane now sits level whereas it used to sit left wing low and also the safety cables had really dug into the old bungees. It's all back together the proper way now and a few test flights around the patch and all is well.
Is this something I can make a logbook entry in myself? or does an A&P have to look it over and make the entry?Last edited by N74DV; 11-24-2006, 15:59.DJ Vegh

I think the A&P needs to sign it off. This is a pretty complex repair from the potential for things to go badly and I don't believe it is specifically listed in the list of owner maintenance items. (although I am not looking at that list) It probably would have been better to have your A&P sign it of BEFORE you took it around the patch to check it out...
