  • Trim system, AGAIN.

Well, I have been through the archives. My trim cable came off the forward pulley. That is a major PITA to get to with the headliner the way it is. A guy just to the noprth of me put an access panel in the top of his fuselage just to access the forward pulley. I am begining to understand the wisdom of that.

My trim cable slips on the forward pulley when trying to trim nose down. Works fine for nose up. Any suggestions on how much tension to add or release to make it work properly?

Put the access panel in, i have some extra material left over for the headliner. Someone needs to devise a double wrap pulley like the later Cubs have to eliminate the problem.

Do a search on trim tab and you should find a lot of useful information. I few years ago, I went through the entire system including replacing the jack screw and got useful information from the tribe.

I'll bet the pulley itself is worn, and that's why the cable slips. The pulley has a V-groove cut in it to grip the cable. If the pulley groove is worn, it only grips on the bottom of the cable instead of the bottom AND SIDES.

I did that first, thank you very much. The reason I asked was that my specific question was not addressed as far as I could find.

Well, I got the trim to work, for the time being at least. I tried loosening the spring tension a bit and that made it not work at all. I then tightened the tension and rosened the cable and it is working as well as can be expected for the time being.

When I was making my system work, someone in the trible suggested using violin bow rosin on the cable at the overhead pulley. You can do this without removing the headliner if it has side zippers. Have had no slipping since.

The way I took care of the access problem is to install a skylight and the problem with the pulley slipping on some I've installed a cub front pulley with a double groove and another single pulley with a spring located at the x brace.

I made a slighty wider pulley and wraped the cabe around twice.I just had to modify the trim indicator in order to get to be functional.I never use the indicator to set trim anyway, its never correct

I sprayed on a small amount of fan belt dressing, available at a auto parts store, several months ago and it's still working just fine, and you don't have to go through any PITA gyrations to get it on.
