  • Hanger Dimensions

What would the optimal length of a home made tcraft hanger be?
I have two 20ft containers I dont know what to do with. I want to build a decent hanger out of them. But, I dont think they would be deep enough, (20Ft). What size are your hangers at home?

    hangar size

    Dear Dan,

I have just completed my hangar @ GOK. It is a 40 X 40 with 12' walls. Now that I have the wings on the Tcart, I should have built a 60 X80. If I would have built the 60 X 80, I would have wanted a 100X150 with 16' walls. If you have only one acft the 40X40 with 12' walls will give you ample room to move around and store your equipment and still have a nice sized area for a work bench with room for a compressor, bench grinder, parts washer and welder. Be sure to have plenty of light and a level floor.

    Best Regards

      Container/Hangar

Dan, Over at Soldotna, there are two buildings built using containers...the trusses rest on a container unit on each side, with clear space available in the center. Twenty foot units might be a bit short, but you could add a "kickout" in the rear to accomodate the tail. Dick

Hope things are well at tcraft lake. You dont happen to have any pics of those two places do you? Road intersections could also be helpful. I seen one, I believe, on the road to swan lake last summer.

          Hanger

My hanger is homemade and is 40' by 40' Inside. It is builted with 4" drill pipe for rafters and 12" casting for the walls. Has a cement floor and metal roof and walls.I have my T-Craft and one MX Sports and of course my John Deere in it. If I build another I think I will go for 50 X 40. The 36' wing on the T-Craft gets close to the walls sometimes,

You guys are all making me jealous..... The one I rent was built in the late 30's or early 40's! The door opening height is only about 6 1/2' because most all the small aircraft were taildragers back then. It keeps the wind, sun, and "most" of the rain off of it though. The price is right too. I really like the airport, and it has three grass runways.

                Hangar of the North!

You guys...the only hangar I've got is that black bag wrapped around the cowling and those wing/tail/windshield covers...! But I do have plenty of parking...! About 200 hundred acres worth.

                  hangarsize

Have container, want hangar, build hangar, put container beside the hangar or use it as one hangarwall/ join it to the hangar for a
SAFE shop. It has been done here in Canada, worked well.
Two Containers Hm = two walls and 40' trusses between them = hangar and 2 shops. OK ?

                    hangerrrrrr

                    Dick,
Looks great man, but what about sweeping your wings? On this side, I have received over two feet of wet snow in one weekend. Better not go to anchorage that weekend!

Ron, you can get containers here in AK very easily. What state are you in, and there is always ebay?

Len, take two containers, put 40 ft truss between them, and you only have now a 20 ft opening for your wings, unless you put the trusses on the inner wall of said containers. How to bridge the gap, so it will hold all of this damned snow? Last week, a 10,000 ft warehouse that used to be a sawmill collapsed under snow load. I tried to get my Tcraft in there at the start of winter, but could not get the corporation, (gold streak natives, Juneau) to cooperate with me. I guess things happen for a reason. Until otherwise, its back to sweeping and parking my truck behind the tcraft in high winds, which is at least twice a month here in Seward.

                      container sources/info

Ron C. inquired as to sources of shipping containers...I searched under: "Used container sales" in the Dogpile search engine and came up with a host of sites offering them for sale. The first on the list was: <http://www.cratexcontainer.com/>

A guide to building with containers was found at: <http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=42130>
The creativity that Taylorcrafters possess will see a host of possibilities in this resource. Dick
