  • Windshield Hardware HELP!

Does anyone here have some information about the little "blind nut anchors" that are in the bottom of the wood piece that is fastened to the upper cabin cross tube

They are called "T-nuts" or "blind nuts" at the hardware store. I have no doubt Taylorcraft picked them up at the hardware store and installed them on new airplanes way back when.

But I need to justify their existence on a Taylorcraft because they are not AN or MS type fasteners. I need something like a factory drawing that points to them and says "part number xyz" or says "commercial blind nut" or whatever.

Anyone who can provide such a drawing or some nomenclature on these little parts PLEASE contact me at 818-701-6801

    Re: Windshield Hardware HELP!

Hi Bill, I enjoy your Forum activity level.

Regarding the T nuts, why does it matter about the drawing? I assume that the drawings are not available that show this level of detail for such a non-structural, hidden part.

For example, on my upholstered door trim panels, there are non-AN screws that have bevelled washers to keep from pulling the screws thru the vinyl fabric. This is the way the airplane came to me and I know that most of the interior is marked Airtex, but should I really concern myself with this non-aircraft hardware?

    Curious about your post...

    Thanks,

    Jack D.

page 14 of the Parts book: B-9067 6 "special nuts" Top of windshield. The B-9067 are Commercial blind nuts of hardware store variety. The screws are AN515-8-12 . Bill & I talked .

I noticed mine had 'em also, but can't see how they are used. I _think_ this is the piece; - Mike

Yeah, that's the piece. Those are the little nuts too.

Jack, the reason I am trying to document them is because the FAA called them into question on my skylight installation. I decided to use a larger size of these blind nuts (what came out of my pre-war were six 6-32 size screws holding the upper windshield !!)

So my drawings referenced the blind nuts I used (Du-Bro brand model airplane parts) and that waved a red flag to the FSDO. The 15 minute epoxy from my model shop also raised a flag, which I sincerely did not expect because the glued parts were not primary structure.

So now I have to jump through flaming hoops showing that hardware store 15 minute epoxy is equal or better than the older glues that were specified in CAR 4 and CAM 18. (remember that the "acceptable" glues used back then included "Casein" glue from horse hooves, which turns to powder over time). But NOBODY seems to have the list of minimum glue strength to meet airplane standards circa 1940. If I had that, I could cross reference that spec with the published specs of the glue I used, and probably be OK.

I have to jump through a hoop showing that my blind nuts are equal or better than Taylorcraft part # B 9067.

Thanks, I didn't know that they were available in stainless. I had already put in th originl style ones and finished the installation, so it would not be appropriate to chenge them out now. But if it were being done again, the stainless ones would be a little bit better. Thanks.
