Rudder pedal bearing?

Yesterday I removed the control "H" that the yokes attach to. I found that where the "H" attaches to the floor the pivots had copper (brass?) strips in them that serve as bearings. Each has a small hole for oil. Nice setup, and worked great for 60 years!

But then I removed the rudder pedals. They also are attached to the floor, but NO copper bearing strips! They have a oil hole, but no bearing insert...just steel on steel. What the he##!?

Is there supposed to be a copper bearing insert in there?

Bob, I installed my rudder assembly last week using new clamps--straps and boy are they tight. I'm thinking of removing the new parts and using the old clamps. Maybe brass shims are the way to go? I'm glad you asked the question because I would like some feed back also

Brass shims are only used to take up the tolerances from a loose fit from manufacturing or wear. They are not needed in every pedal.

This is true, IF he shims are used make sure the holes match so the oil goes inside where it belongs.

Howdy: I just finished installing the control system on N43306 last week -the rudder pedals did not have brass bearings on the half-rings - the control yoke assembly did have full brass bearings with oiling holes that lined up with the steel half rings. As an aside, I was able to fabricate new yoke tube blocks and control line blocks from linen phenolic sheet - took about 30 minutes to do all of them, including the 3/4" holes. Doc

Its not rocket science is it! C.G. TAylor, Bernard Pietenpohl , Steve Wittman & many others used what ever was around......
