  • Where to find wheel bearings?

Can someone point me to a good place to find the wheel bearings for my '46 BD12D? The local bearing house can special order them for $110 for all four, including races. I need

    2 inner: 08123 bearing/08231 race
    2 outer A-6075 baering/A-6162 race

    Thanks! Bob

Re: Where to find wheel bearings?

    Hi Bob,

I bought mine last year at an industrial company called Motion Industries. I think they used to be called Bearings, Inc. They have sales and warehouses in most major cities. (I'm near Pittsburgh)

I pulled out my bill and it says I paid $69 total incl tax (7%) for two sets of bearing and race, but I see that my numbers are different than yours,

Timken 08231 for the cup, but 08125 for the cone. That is the "buy-it-now" price which is always a little high.

You could also go to e-bay. I bought my Timken bearings for my Scott 2000 tailwheel on e-bay from a place in Indianapolis (surplus) for $13 delivered!

I plugged the 08231 number in to e-bay and I found it, although the price, I believe is steep, at $65 for cup and cone (double what I paid). You will have to cut-n-paste the address below.... or search that number on e-bay.

Note that their numbered set is also 08125 / 08231

Is there a bearing test? How do you determine when it's time to replace them?
My old bearings cleaned up nicely...they look like new, turn freely. Should I just re-grease them and re-install?

Yes, if there isn't any pitting or discoloration on the race or rollers. If the bearing surfaces are smooth and not worn excessivly it is acceptable to pack them and reinstall for another go around.

My parts book shows 08125 & 08231 as the correct part number for the tapered axle landing gear.

Perhaps 08123 is a typo, but its not the correct bearing #.

            Bob,

There is a local Motion Industries here in Springfield, IL. I can order them and get them the next day. They are great guys and very knowledgeable. Let me know if you have any difficulty in finding some, if so I can order them and send them to you. Let me know.

P.S. By the way there are the expensive precision bearings, big $$$, or the regular 'Buick' bearings that are the same but cheaper. I don't have part numbers in front of me, they have been posted on this site before. I have them filed away and can get to tomorrow.

Re: Where to find wheel bearings?

Thanks everybody for all the great replies. That is a typo on the first bearing number - its an 08125! I'm getting them through Motion Industries and they should be here in a few days. Now the next question...

How do I get that inner bearing race out? I've tried the loan-a-tool approach at both Autozone Aero and Pep Boys Aero - nothing they loan will work. Do I need to take it to a machine shop to get it pulled?

              Thanks again. Bob

Thanks Bob - Just spent the last half hour searching the dozen threads and embedded links that came up to the suggested key words. I'm still confused! Didn't see any suggestions about how to get the races off of the inner wheel. Help! Bob

Re: Where to find wheel bearings?

Sorry, Dont have any hands on experience with anything but newer style cleveland wheels. BUt here is an old trick from my Farm days.

Heat the wheel up gently (in Arizona, we put it in the sun for an hour. We could fry a burger and then fix the bearing...). Then get some dry ice at the store and put a big chunk on the race. It will shrink and fall out. Sometimes we had to do this 2 or 3 times to get it to move enough to break loose the rust and corrosion.

be patient for a reply from the guys that know how to do this the right way, it takes a few days for them to check in and offer up their advice.

                    bob.

You may also find that the outside face of the race housing is peined (punched) in two places to hold the race in place. These will need to be dressed back or tapped back to allow the race to fall out.

Re: Where to find wheel bearings?

                        Bob,

It is a huge pain in the you know where. If you look in the Technical Resources section on the left side of the page and then choose FAQ's when you first sign in, you will find a technique to use a screwdriver with the tip bent over to get into the edge of the race. I utilized this technique and was able to finally get them out without buggering things up too much. I wish I had though about the heating/cooling method, I had only used the heating method. Also, as you have found, the search method can give you a lot of information, or a lot of headaches depending on what you are searching for. You will soon discover both the techniques to find info and those to listen to for advice. This site can be a great help. Glad to hear you can get the bearings locally.
                        Cheers,
                        Marty

I have run a bead of weld on the bearing race completely around the inside of the race making sure not to get any weld on the wheel. Weld a 1/4 inch at a time and let cool awhile between welds so you dont melt the wheel a When it cools or before it will fall out. Marv

thanks all - I'll give the hot/cold approach a try first. i'll also look for the peening that Rob suggested. I really do appreciate you suggestions. I'll let you know what I find out. Bob

Re: Where to find wheel bearings?

I have not used this method on Shinn wheel bearing but in other sitiuation.

Welding with a small rod or TIG on the bearing race will heat it and then it will shrink and litteraly fall out after cooling.
Cuting it with small airgrinder also works.
Good workmanship are ecential in but cases as severe damage can easly be dune if you miss with the grinder or weldingrod.
                              Be carefull!
