Needed: Bungee Covers

After a couple of flying hangovers, I have tested and measured too much CO in the cabin. The highest measurement is under the seat above the uncovered bungees. 150-200 ppm. Reading up near my face is 40-50ppm. Worst hangover seems to occur after flying on turbulent days, so I think the actual reading would be worse then - I tested on a calm day.

Need to buy some bungee covers to clear this problem up.

Anyone have any for sale or know of a good source? Tried e-mailing someone mentioned in another thread, he made plastic ones. No response.

Hi Andy,

Just a thought, is it higher near the bungees because air is coming in or going out?

It is definately coming in through the bungee hole. Besides, the reading is fairly low close to the rudder pedals. The reading actually goes down when the cabin heat is turned on.

Considering that this aircraft was a certified plane when I got it, it amazes me that an AME would allow such an important part to go missing.

I have owned a t-craft that had no bungee covers and did not have a similar problem. Is the exhaust in the standard place on the RH side?

I was just talking to Harry at the Taylorcraft factory in Texas yesterday, asking about a variety of airframe parts, and he said they have the bungee covers. Haven't gotten a price back from him yet.

One of my bungee covers was broken in half, so I showed the other (intact) half to one of our new mechanics. (Dick Smith's son, Joel) He looked at it, and then at the English Wheel sitting in the corner. I came back the next day and WOW, there was a brand new bungee cover, drilled and ready to install sitting on the work bench! I was amazed. He said he had never used the English Wheel before and tinkered with it until he figured it out.

If you are not a purist it is pretty easy to make up a set using a flat sided pattern. I removed my original ones as they were full of repairs and wanted to save them for a pattern. In the mean time I made up a new set from some scrap .025 aluminum that was lying around the hangar. Using the original dimensions I made up a new set with each half consisting of a top panel, side rib and base plate. All pieces were riveted together. And while I am not a fan of box style construction they do the job. ( being on the belly out of sight helps). As they were custom made for my aircraft they are a tight fit with little or no gaps around them. They took about 2 hrs to make and paint.

As far as your exhaust system is concerned I have seen many Taylorcrafts with the exhaust rusted through right where it exits the cowling. Also check to see that you don't have any leaks at your exhaust gaskets.

Years ago I bought a brand new set of bungee covers but never used them because they always get dinged up and break. I used them for a mold and made fiberglas covers. So, maybe that's impure but they have lasted for more than a decade without breaking or getting bent. You wouldn't know them from aluminum covers if you didn't look right close.

A few years ago, I purchased a fiberglass pair on eBay. They required a bit of cutting and fitting, but they look great, work great, and have been trouble free for the past few years.

Harry Ingram at the factory just emailed me prices for a variety of parts. He has the bungee covers, part no. 0157-9, for only $11.50 each.

Even better, he has the hard-to-fabricate curved lower windshield fairing, part no. 1132-1, for $95.56.

Speaking of part numbers, does anyone have a 1946 factory parts price list for the BC12-D? The parts price list I got from someone seems to be pre-war, with mostly BC-50 model parts.

Thanks Rob, that's just what I needed.

After an exchange of clarifying emails with the factory, I need to retract my previous post -- they don't have the bungee covers. Part number 0157-9 for $11.50 is the "dust shield", which they're telling me is the three-hole hubcap I'm also seeking, but which I suspect might be the brake cover on the inboard, not outboard, side of the wheel.
