  • Help me find a movie

    Maybe some of you can help me find a movie or at least remember the name of it. I remember watching it with my father and grandfather when I was maybe 10 years old or so. It was about thses 2 guys who bought a barn full of stuff at an auction or something like that and they found an old Stearman inside.Some other old guy talked them into keeping it and he also taught them how to fly it.Another part I remember is they were fueding over which way to go as they had engine trouble....I really don't remember anything else about it but maybe some of you guys will.
    Thanks

    Kevin,
    There was Secondhand Lions about 2-3 years ago. Robert Duvall and Michael Caine rebuild a Stearman and teach themselves to fly....could that be it? Probably not, I'm guessing you're older than 12.

    There's a Stearman in the Aviator with Christopher Reed.

      Hi Kevin,

      Here's a couple of wild guesses;

      1) "Magnificent men and their flying machines"- movie with old airplanes too early for Stearmans

      2) "Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad world" - there is a part with a biplane

      Best guesses I have now, both were late '60s movies.

        Hey Kev;
        Howabout Charley Varick with Walter Mathau. He's a bug sprayer with a Stearman. That's not the plot that you spoke about but I'm full of irrelevant guesses.
        Talk to you soon;

          Seems that I remember something like that from a Sunday night Disney movie. Maybe late sixties early seventies. Tom

            I searched the movie database and find nothing similar so I bet a TV movie is a very good guess. Dave.

              Guys,this movie was in the early 1980's.It was in color and not very old at the time. I think it may have been something like a disney movie.2 young men bought a barn and it's contents in a rummage sale or maybe they inheirited it but it had an old biplane(either a stearman or a waco) and the old guy that taught them how to fly claimed to have invented the hammer head stall or something like that. My dad said he thought the name of it was "The Hammerhead Stall" but it has been several years ago and it's hard to remember.It only aired once to our knowlege. It was not a real old movie.It was filmed in the early 1980's or maybe late 1970's.

                There's the Disney movie 'Rag Wing' Where the grandson is living w/ his grandfather in So. Cal. Grandpa has his "old biplane" (really a rag wing experimental?) up in the barn and they fix it up to fly. Then the kid's father shows up and tries to stop them..............

                  That one is close, but not it, I think.

                  I remember the movie. '80s vintage, It was a two parter. The first part was about these two kids who attended an estate sale. The sale ended before the contents of the barn could be sold. The kids made a deal with the auctioneer to buy the contents of the barn, site unseen, for something like 100 dollars. In the rafters was this old bi-plane. I think it was an open cockpit Waco, but not sure. They then go about restoring the airplane

                  The second episode was about them learning to fly the airplane. The show ended with them flying to or around the Vancouver Canada airport. I for the life of me cannot remember the name of it though.

                  Sorry I can't be more help. I would like to know the name also. I want to see it again.

                            Re: Help me find a movie

                            It has occures to me that most of us have been cursed by the media. That the act of flying in a small plane is somehow dangerous and we have participated by retelling tales of "daring do" of flying our little birds. Most of the time we recount these tales in a laconic and "Right-stuff" Chuck Yeager drawl.

                            No one ever gets in a small plane, in a movie or TV show, without crashing. Usually it's the tragic and heroic end of a despensible character. It's no longer a plot twist really, but a plot device and a cliche. I'd love to see a movie that captures the poetry of flight and the everyday thrill defying gravity.

                            I'd go for a movie in which somebody got in a small plane, had a nice trip, and landed safely... making the act of flying out for what it is -- A great pleasure. And, let the rest of the story proceed carrying on with murder and mayhem.

                            Anybody ever seen one of those? Just curious. If you have continue the thread and report it -- I'd like to find one of those movies.
                            With regards;

                              I think you are right Ed. Today if it ain't burning crashing or dying it's not worth watching. I can remember some of the older TV programs put flying in a positive productive light. The few that come to (what's left of my) mind are: The Bob Cummings Show? (Anybody remember the name of his green Cessna?) and Sky King. How about Gadabout Gaddis the flying fisherman.
