    Thanks for this advice, since I'm miking one now on an A-65 about ready for reassembly. I'll mike the clearance and then use plastigage and report the results.

    I should point out, since I mentioned "honing" the oil pump cover plate with a thick glass and fine sandpaper, that the plate is not costly to replace.

    It serves as a bearing for the drive shaft of the oil pump and therefore is quite an important part of the oil pump. If the bearing in this cover plate is worn beyond limits it certainly should be replaced. The plate that I cleaned up was from a low-time engine that had to be torn down because of a special problem unrelated to TBO, and the bearing was still in new limits.

    I like new limits better than "serviceable" ones but will take "serviceable" when I have to.

      Don't settle for service limits on the cam journal. The headache is not worth it.

      I will go get another rear case off the shelf, or go buy a bunch more to inspect at the next auction before I spend $600 to repair a rear case. It is not that hard to come up with a perfect one or new one still.
