Anyone know if there is a compiled roster of small airparks across the US? We're traveling via motorhome from Virginia to Monterey, CA soon and would love to visit airparks.....

      Re: Airparks

That sounds like a wonderful trip, Pegi.

Sharon and I motorhome cross country every summer. We stay in National Forests (NOT National Parks), State Parks, and WalMarts. We plan our trip to include several days at an airshow...it's Arlington, WA this year.

We've never tried airparks, but it's a great idea. Please post here the story of your adventures!

Bob, keep an eye out for the Stinson I did...it should be there. N108TD. Bright orange, with blue and off-white stripes. Toby Dunlap is the guy that owns it..he learned to fly with a Tcraft out of Ketchican, AK and retired from United...great guy and loves to talk airplanes!!!

I don't know if it's close to your route or not, but there is a campground on a private (public) airport just South of Effingham IL right off of interstate 70. It's called Percival Springs Airport and Campground. If you need more information just ask. Like everywhere there is not enough flying activity, but they are nice people. They have a restaurant on site with pretty good food. Tom

            John:
That's sure a fine looking Stinson! I'll look for her at Arlington.

I think we can all learn from those stripes. That white outline around them really sets them off...much better than the plain black stripe or a plain white stripe that you see so often. Nice.

Is that Poly Fiber? Tennessee Red?

              Re: Airparks

Yes Bob, it's Polyfiber Aerothane, and thanks for the compliments! It's International Orange, with Christian Eagle Blue. The thin stripes are Insignia White, with about 10% (have to look at the logs to remember for sure) black. Plain white was just "too much"...so we toned it down just a bit and it really helped. The big thing is that we shot the whole airplane white first, then painted color. That's why it sort of "glows" in the sun.
I hope you do get to meet Toby...he's an awesome guy with some fantastic experience behind him! If you do, be sure to ask him about when he flew his Tcraft down to Seattle from Ketch... and the trouble with using the float as a ferry tank!
Enjoy the show...wish I was going to be there.

John,is that a Goose in your avatar pic? I'm currently recovering the control surfaces on a 1942 Widgon for an old fellow. Everything was going very nice until I opened up the rudder and found a load of corrosion in the bottom third and around the rudder horn where it attaches to the spar. I also had to replace the trailing edges of the flaps, looked everywhere to find it and finally made them myself....glad I did because they really truned out nice,he might not like it when he gets my bill .lol

                  Kevin,

On the odd chance.......what is the SN# on the Widgeon? Grandpa's was #1245 (NC1177V). I have been looking for it for years. To date it has eluded even the diehard Widgeon buffs including George Pappas. It turtled in Delevan, WI in the 80's and dissappeared off the records.

Yes, Kevin...that's N327. You might have seen her in "Tales of the Golden Monkey" or "Commando". Great aircraft, those Grummans....simple, straight forward, and tough... not to mention the "fun factor"!!
