gauge markings

Hi Gang,

I've got a '46 with a Harer/Gilberti conversion. My gauges appear older, but may not be original (perhaps some?) My questions are: Am I illegal because none of the gauges have colored markings? ie. NE lines on the airspeed and tach, green arc on the oil temp, etc. If so, can I just paint them on the glass? And is there a way to determine what gauges/model numbers should be original? I'd like to get that "authentic look."

Hi Buck,

The picture I recently posted of the old 3 in 1 gauge does not have markings on the oil temp or pressure dials either. At the next annual, my Inspector / Mechanic told me to get some decals from Wag Aero or Aircraft Spruce, etc. For now, I just put them on the exterior glass.

Innocent question: if the aircraft was originally certificated without instrument markings, are you now legally obliged to add markings?

If so, would you require a field approval for such a modification? What rules and regulations (FAR's?) require the operator to add markings?

If you add markings without FAA approval (and hence illegally), do you invalidate your insurance?
